Hi folks-
I've got the urge to try a touring bike for a while, and it seems there are a few reasonably priced 1999-2002 K1200LTs around the country. I've never bought a bike with out seeing it before, but the idea of a fly and ride sure is interesting. I've never been up close to a K1200LT (that I know of, certainly not since I've been interested), and I'd need to sit on one to feel out the ergos before I could even think about doing that though. Does anyone know of a used one at a local dealer? I checked AJ's site, nothing there. Or does anyone nearby have one they wouldn't mind me having a look at and possibly sitting on? I've seen a couple on Craigslist, but I don't want to bother someone if I'm not intending to buy their bike.
Also, not being that familiar with BMWs, is there any service that must be done by dealer in the '99-02 years? (that requires computer/software/electronic tools, etc to reset anything?). I tend to like to work on my own bikes for the most part. I'm hesitant to get into a bike that will require me to spend a lot on labor; that's where I'm used to saving money.

I only saw one LT in person before I bought mine. One up close look and an owner who was willing to let me sit on the seat was all it took for me to know I had to have one. Can't help you for the sit on it part as I'm in Southwest Washington State.

The big difference between the bikes in the years you listed is the brakes.

The '99 to EARLY '01's do not need any dealer interaction to keep them running and performing regular maintenance. Beginning Jan 1, 2001 the brakes were switched to integral brakes with servo assist. I believe the dealer has to reset the Motronic when the integrated brakes are serviced. You can do the service from home.

If you come to consider an '01 the way to tell the early ones from the late ones is to read the casting on the outside of the brake calipers. The early non-integrated brakes have the word BREMBO cast into them while the later ones have BMW cast in.

There may be some advantages to the earlier bikes. If the servo pump goes out on the integrated brake models it is like trying to stop a power brake car with the engine off. It can be done but it takes a lot more effort. No servo pump on the earlier models. Service is simpler on the non integrated brakes but the integrated brakes can be serviced at home just a little more complicated.

Consider taking a test ride at a BMW dealership.

If you are in Wester MA, Pittsfield, you'll have to head to Albany or Danbury.

The first place I'd check for a used LT is MAX BMW.
