Hi Folks!
I just purchased a 2006 K1200LT with 41,000 miles on it yesterday. I plan on doing some key maintenance on it. It’s been maintained well with records but there are a few things that need to be addressed.
1) I smell some fuel on startup and have read about the quick disconnects going bad etc . I’m not sure when the fuel filter was replaced either. It sounds like I should upgrade to steel quick disconnects and replace fuel filter? anything else fuel related?
2) The general warning light on the dash( Red triangle !) stays lit up. It appears that is due to an ABS fault? How can I confirm?
3) It has the stock brake lines and I plan to install Spiegler. Considering item 2, I’m now wondering if I may need to bypass the ABS pump? how to confirm?
4) It has a boosterplug on it and I’m considering John John Gemi ’s chip. I’m assuming John’s chip is better and not compatible and the booster plug needs to be removed? Do I then need a new intake air temp sensor? ( the original did not come with the bike)
5) The BMW GPS keeps glitching out and wanting to do a screen calibration and save a favorite while riding.. are these known to have issues? Or do I perhaps just have a bad electrical connection? Curious on experience with these units.
6) Are aftermarket exhausts still available?
7) It has the xenon headlight and it appears the high beam isn’t working, what are the best and brightest bulbs?
😎
Can the variety of OEM bulbs be replaced with LEDs? Will the dash light up with a warning ? Do I need resistors?
9) With the bike apart and the tank off, are there other maintenance items or upgrades I should perform?
Thanks in advance for the assist!

ABS light on steady means that ONLY residual braking is available in both front and rear circuits. You will have a very hard time stopping this beast with residual braking (no servo power operation). Replacing the lines and a good flush and bleed following may clear this issue up but don't hold your breath. Either way you will want the best lines on there if you do bypass.

Hello and welcome. These are the type of fuel disconnects I have and they’ve been extremely reliable. Readily available across the USA. Check out Summit Racing and of course Amazon. Wishing you happy rides. God bless.

Welcome! Great bike! Most everything you ask about (and lots more) has been discussed at length over the years. Search (Advanced--restrict to K1200LT forum) will take you there. Check date of post to insure it's not ancient. Brakes are critical issue to be addressed first. SS brake line replace has been discussed at length, along w/ flush/bleed procedure--which is complicated by the wheel circuit/control circuit through the ABS unit under the seat. Hope you get that fixed cuz I think ABS is essential on this beast. (Not everyone agrees, but you have 1/2 ton of machine+ you trying to stop. As I recall, no exhaust currently available. Check here, Ebay, etc. for those. Replacing bulbs is not without some challenges. Check forum for specifics. I can't recall reading anything about the GPS, so likely electrical connection--corrosion. Fuel smell is a concern, so monitor that. You don't want it to start on fire while you're riding it! Fuel filter change every 24k miles per schedule, so it may have been done at last major service. How long did it sit w/ gas in it before you got it? If it sat a while, ethanol in gas could mess things up.

For headlight I used this from Xenon Depot:
H7 LED Motorcycle Headlight Kit and H7 LED upgrade
It’s here! The brightest H7 LED headlight bulb has hit the market! Finally, an LED bulb that offers a functional beam pattern, and awesome light output to boot! High quality Philips Luxeon MZ LED chips, Waterproof IP 65-68 certification (shock and water proof), and NO bulky fans (which are prone to failure) - what else can you ask for?
Our H7 LED Headlight bulb features a flexible copper mesh heat-sync, to allow greater installation flexibility. Other H7 LED upgrades use a bulky fan to cool the bulb, which usually gets in the way, and makes installation a pain - or impossible.
  • 2500 lumens each
  • 360 degree light output
  • 2 Philips Luxeon MZ LED diodes per bulb
  • 100% Copper (Cu) flexible weave cloth heat-sink - perfect for tight spaces!
  • White 6000K colour temperature is perfect for color matching with HID and LED headlights
  • Voltage: DC12V-24V / Input (A): 1.6A±0.2A
  • Lifespan: 50,000 hours
  • Direct replacement for your H7 headlight bulb
  • 2 year warranty
  • Sold in individually
I ordered LED bulbs for turn signals and dash from Superbright and installed with no problems for 5 years.

I just finished the ABS bypass using Kirk's Spiegler kit on my 2000 LT and can't say I've noticed any difference in braking power sans ABS. Just my $.02, but I wouldn't warn anyone away from going this route if fixing or replacing the ABS unit isn't an option.

The 2000 does not have the servo brakes. A bypass is not even necessary because the ABS does not add power to the brakes it just prevents you from locking up a wheel. In the case of the servo units you MUST bypass a failed unit as you will not have any brake power at all.

It was advertised for $5,500 then he dropped the price to $4,000 and I contacted him immediately. He said he had someone coming to look at it on Saturday the 13th, so I dropped everything and drove 2.5 hours in Rush hour traffic on Friday the 12th to get it. It was sitting in the garage since about 2015. Date code on the Metzelers is 2014. It had the fuel smell, so I suspected the quick disconnects and sure enough they were bad. This is what it looks like currently as I get it fully ready to log miles.

On the booster plug, it is installed via connectors that go between the original temp probe and the connector for that probe via two connectors. You should still have an original temp probe.
Here is a way to bypass the ABS, but my second listing is a clean way to go.
This is a clean kit that keeps your electronic functions going like the speedometer and some other items.
Here is one from Poland:
I suggest you use regular halogen bulbs for now until you address your many issues. Most of the LED bulbs are bogus, there are a few good ones but limited. The bike is stripped down, check for oil on top of the engine, leaky crankcase vent hose if oil found.
