OK, so I bought my first LT on a whim it is a 1999, it looked REALLY cool and it was a "steal" and I did not know if I would like it so a used one for a steal seamed like the way to "try one on for size".

It was sort of an impulse buy.

Now after many miles I love the bike, have discovered that I like riding the beast and really love putting 500 miles on her in a day. The problem is that I want a NEW ONE. One that is mine from the start! I would consider the VERY low miles 2009 as mostly new...

I have my old one sold and have two options on a 2009

The local dealer has a new 2009 for $18.9K (The BMW website says that they have a free $1250 in BMW gear with all 2009 LT purchases)

A local person has a 2009 with 3500 miles and is asking $16K (I believe that I can get it for $15K) In Service date of Dec 2008, so it has 14 months of warranty and 33K miles left.

I have cash in hand for the used bike.

So considering that it will be a $4000 price Delta and a loss of 2 years of warranty.

What to do? What to do

Oh and to throw a monkey wrench to the whole deal, there is a 2003 with 3K miles on it down the street also. Of course it is out of warranty but the seller wanted $8K for it.

Personally, I would by the used 2009 and pocket the $4k for any unlikely expenses in the remaining warranty period.

Essentially you are playing the odds that you will spend less than $4k in the remaining 33k miles of warranty.

However, if really want to own it from new, just walk into the dealer and tell him to wrap up a brand new 2009 for me please :)

Either way you will have a great bike!

What year was your old one?

I'd compare your loss vs. gain of features probably more. I understand that pre-'05 vs post-'05 is a common question. I got my '03 LT Custom for $6800, It did have 60K miles on it. But honestly it rides as smooth as glass. Seeing the features that the post-'05 LTs have, I kinda second guess myself.

But either way, I got two of most wanted bikes in my drive way; A Yamaha V-Max and a BMW K1200-LT.

And honestly, I'd kill for a '08/'09 LT. But right now oil field is next to nill.

Paul,

I'd go for the used 09 depending on the service history. IMHO, a used low mileage bike has had most of the failures corrected under warranty. Should spell less down time for you. Maybe you could get an extended warranty for a price?

I'd pass on the 03 especially at that price.

Let us know what hapenz.

I would go with used 2009 provided that it has no issues.

thanks guys.

Keep the comments coming.

I talked to the dealer and they have an RPM1 warranty for 3 years fo $1600 unlimited miles.

But the guy explained that it ran concurrent with the existing warranty. so I would lose a year of the warranty...

I am waiting anxiously for the seller to contact me.

I'll buy new from the dealer.

Reasons? By the time you add the cost of the warranty (that is not as good as the factory warranty) and the $1,250 in gear the difference is not that great.
Having bought new from the dealer will (should) get you better service and "goodwill" from the dealer and BMWNA. The second owner is always looked at different than the guy that buys new of the showroom floor. Plus you dont need to worry what the previous owner did. I am talking such things as abusing the clutch or transmission etc.

Something to ponder...

You can buy the extended warranty any time before the factory one runs out so get the used one the get the warranty later.

For me, I'd have to wait until I saw the new 1600. As good as those look, it might be that you'll want one of them, and if not, there'll likely be a bunch of LTs up for sale for the guys that want a new one. Either way, you'll probably win.

I'd go with the new one. As a matter of fact, I did. I just purchased a new LT and made the decision for a few reasons. First, the dealers are practically giving the few remaining new ones away and you get the full warranty. By the time you spend the money on a used '09 and add whatever accessories you want, you have spent the same money as for new. Like someone else has already stated, you don't have to concern yourself with how the original owner rode it and the dealer will treat you better if you purchase new from them rather than just have them service a used bike. All of these reasons went into my decision.

Just my thoughts.

Paul, I just traded my 2009 K1200LT for an RT at Blue Moon Cycles, in Norcross, Ga. The bike had 7400 miles, just put a new front tire on it, was in excellent condition, had the comm system and GPS installed. I had the 6000K miles service done about a month ago and I bought the bike in June of 2009, so plenty of warranty left. If you called them, bet you could get a good price going in to the winter. Just thought I would mention it. I have no affiliation with them other than trading bikes.

This is your last opportunity to buy new......

Just sayin.

As for me I'd probably buy the '03. I HATE new vehicle depreciation!

It sounds like your heart is set on a new one. Go with your heart and don't look back. The new 1600? It aint no LT.

The RPMone extended warranty I purchased on my 05 did not go into effect till original expired. Thus giving me a five year extension on the bike that has already returned over thrice what the policy cost. I purchased the policy from BMW of Eugene, OR, while on a four corner tour at a great price. Dealers have a wide discretion of what they can and will charge. RPM required an inspection from a dealer and that was all. My experience with stealers in FL would encourage me to check with RPM my self and get the facts B4 putting down my cash.

And yes get the used, purchase extended, and ride like you stole it !!!!!!!

also I called the company and RPM will warranty a bike after original expires, but at a higher rate

The resale value of these bikes keeps dropping by leaps and bounds. Unless the dealer was giving you the new one for the same price as the used one I wouldn't consider a new one. I also think the used 09 you quoted is priced too high also. You can get a 2005 which is virtually the same bike for between 9K and 12K with low miles. I saw an 04 LT on Cycletrader today for 7K. Oh the pain . . .

After just having to have a new 07 and riding it from new as you would like to do, I understand.

However after wearing that t-shirt, and if I had a do over I would have bought used.

Especially now with a new model coming, and a crappy economy.

Gonna be a buyers market. I paid 21,000 for mine new. So your new dealer quote is all ready cheaper then mine new.

Save your money and find a well kept used 07 or 08 and save yourself the first hit financially new bike buyers take, and buy a warranty or farkels with the money you saved.

Any aftermarket warranty I inquired about went like this, you could buy it while the bike was still in warranty, and it started when the factory warranty ran out. A lot of variables in them but that was the basics. Some would not sell if your bike was out, some would but higher price, some transferable, some not, blah, blah.

Good luck and once bitten, you will for sure get the one you want.
