I just had an idea and was wondering if anyone had beaten me to the punch.

I was riding home tonight with the temp reaching 53 degrees F (that starts to get cold from 80 degree weather 2 hours prior). I happened to not have my gloves with me at the time. Now normally this isn't a problem with the heated hand grips, but I decieded to find out how hot the air was with the temp guage showing between the cold mark and norm temp mark. What I found was that the amount of heated air coming just around the knee pads just forward of the rider was significantly warmer than the outside temp. Then I tried to divert the air with my hand and effectively heated my knee/shin.

So the idea was to build a Plexiglas oval concave air "diverter" to route the air from where the heated air exits just in front of the knee pad to where your legs are. I'd also like to have the ability to remove this "diverter" with thumb screws and only have a small mount left on the side of the bike.

Tell me what you guys think.

Oh and I am not patenting this idea, so if someone would like to use it, go ahead. (just as long as that person provides one set to me at a discounted price :D )

I suggested cutting new vents into the tupperware above the legs a few months ago. Here is a link to the thread....

After all of the responses, I've decided against it. Your air diverter idea may be more feasible, with less permanant damage to the bike, but the results may be the same. You never really know unless you try.

With heated grips and heated seat, the next area I would like heat, is the feet. Never worked out where all the hot air from the bike ends up though.
Very early on in the LT years someone developed and sold removable foot "lowers" that mounted just in front of the feet. Presumably for winter riding. They would also deflect engine heat back onto the boots. I'm not sure whatever happened to them or why they were not successful. You can probably find some photos of them in on the archive site. Seems like Meese had some or knew about them.

Well for the foot area I would just use heated socks. But as for the leg area, where that knee pad is its dead air when one is traveling faster than 25 mph. (don't quote me on this) And with something like what I did with my hand would make riding much more enjoyable. Granted its not going to heat your legs much, but anything higher than ambient would be preferable. (sorry for the crude picture)

Is it just me or does this "crude" picture have a provocative look to it? :eek2:

Jer (yeah, probably just me)

Yes, it is pretty hard to patent an idea once it has been publicly disclosed! :)

I've ridden down to 25F and never needed heat for my knees/shins, but sure could you something to divert the air down to my toes that would be a different story.
