I took my 2009 K1200LT in for the 600 mile service yesterday. It overheated 3 times on the 15 mile ride there (Stop and go I-5 traffic) about 83 degrees out. I was going about 5 miles per hour in the left lane when it forst happened, I got over into the right lane near the Tacoma Dome and got some clean air, I felt a rush of hot air on my legs and the bike started to cool down. I got off I-5 and tried to take some side roads and nurse it to the dealership, I hit more stop and go traffic and had to pull off the road and shut the bike down in some shade. At first the dealership thought that the bike had not been properly prepped (none or not enough coolant, I bought it from a different dealership) but they called me today and said the radiator fan was not working. I've ridden six hundred miles but this is the first stop and go traffic so this could have been inop since I got the bike. Is this a common issue? Could I have damaged my bike having it overheat? What should I look for? Thanks.

Steve, you really don't need hot weather to get it to "overheat". Stopping at a light for too long will cause the needle to creep toward the red any season of the year. When the needle gets to the white line just before the red part on the gauge the radiator fan on both sides should switch on. The temp falls quickly but when the fans switch off the heat will build up again. If one of the rad fans is mia then it would likely enter the red zone.

Did any fluid exit the cooling system?

Loren,
There was some fluid loss from the overflow bottle under the seat, but not much. I do not have a white and red guage, just a digital graphic and it maxed out and the red Thermometer warning light came on. According to what the shop told me on the phone today only one fan was bad but it blew the fuse so neither fan was working at all. It did over heat to the point of the indicator reading max and the warning light coming on twice yesterday on the way to the shop.

Well, I wouldn't be too pleased to stress my new bike like that.

my '05 has warmed but never got the flashing alarm.

So, I'd say you probably are "ok"... especially since you started moving pretty quick.

Otherwise I would ask if dealer would "back me up" on it.

If machine is overheating/malfunctioning, prudence dictates not using the machine...so, we have some responsibility in their use.

I'd say that you are better than OK since you are still under warranty.

Biggest issue would be the overhead cam bearing surfaces (just aluminum). Damage there would be evident on the first valve check @12K. But these are pretty bullet proof engines and as long as you didn't open her up for long periods with the red light on you should be OK.

Picked my bike up from the shop this evening. They replaced one of the fans and everything seems to be in order. They changed the oil and checked the bike out. They seem confident everything is ok. I drove it home with no problems. They did replace the fan under warranty so there is a record of the incident. I hope to have many carefree miles on this bike!! I will be taking it to the Oregon coast next weekend to see Blue Oyster Cult and Foghat

BOC and Foghat? Now, there's a flashback!
No kidding. Seen them both in their original lineups. Both good bands. Saw Foghat 2 or 3 times. Can't remember exactly....don't know why. :p
