hello everyone.
just picked up a nice 99 with 33k on it. i read all the common issues with the k12lt and none really concerns me
i once was a powersports tech at a major dealer. all the asian and harley brands.
my first bmw cycle i work on alot of cars and trucks as well. my last car was a 06 bmw z4 ///M which i did all the service work on but it just got totaled while it was parked:frown:

i have quads john deere tractors ect ect i love any thing mechanical old and new.

im sure i can learn alot from all you and looking to tare me up some road an my new 99 bmw. the weight of the bike dosent bother me as im 6,1 285lb powerlifter and no i cant bench press the bike:grin:
i also have a 04 honda rc51

Welcome from Sugar Hill, GA. Sounds like you will not have any trouble handling the work that could be required on the LT. First order of business would be if the brake lines are OEM rubber, they break down from the inside and burst when you least expect it so replace them if they have not been already. Spiegler makes a stainless braided set with everything needed.

Welcome from Sugar Hill, GA. Sounds like you will not have any trouble handling the work that could be required on the LT. First order of business would be if the brake lines are OEM rubber, they break down from the inside and burst when you least expect it so replace them if they have not been already. Spiegler makes a stainless braided set with everything needed.

dealer Gateway bmw did the 36k service and then some when they got it. total bill was 2,800$ that they did retail so they really went over the bike. but i will upgrade to the ss lines for sure.

thanks everyone. first used bike i bought that i really have nothing to do on. dealer covered everything. they even drilled the weep hole just incase. i did order a new michelin rear tire for the future. guess i will just keep polishing it up:)

Not sure that Michelin makes a proper rear tire for the LT. She calls for a 79V .

Welcome to the Forum, may want to double check on that Michelin rear. Only a few tires built to handle the weight profile on this bike, Michelin doesn't make one rated for it.

all the weight of the bike is not all on the rear otherwise the lt would need like a 90 a 73 is rated at 805lbs if i put my bike on a a scale no way there would be 800lbs on just the rear plus tire pressure plays a role in that rating as well

but of coarse others will disagree
but happy riding:wink:

You won't be the first to have to learn the hard way that BMW specifies a 79V REINForced rear tire for a reason. Enjoy your squirrelly Michelin while it lasts.

There have been many discussions on this. Your bike, your life, your choice and if it does fail from being under rated, I only hope that you don't take anyone else with you. I also hope you never ride 2 up.

Another consideration is if you are involved in an accident and are discovered to be running under rated equipment, your insurance will evaporate. Also, please do not be an advocate of running under rated equipment on this forum. If you want to do it, just do it. No one else needs to know. We did our part and let you know.

Just sayin.

well if i put it on and its unsafe feeling well im not gonna keep it on:cool:
they must spec a tire for the most demanding conditions the bike may encounter. i.e 2 up load to the max running 120mph through the hot desert. which none of i'll be doing..

simply put if i dont like it or i only get 1,000 miles out of it i will change it out since i mount and balance all my own (and others) tires and wont get another:wave

As I said, some learn from the mistakes of others and some have to repeat the mistakes. :smile:

In case you haven't come across it yet, the hot combination for good performance, life and safety (meets BMW requirements) is Metzeler 880 on front with 42 psi and Bridgestone BT020 (bias REINF version) with 48 psi. Other combinations work, such as all Metz or all Bridgestone, but you get shorter life either front or rear.

The earlier LTs, I think 2005 was the year the front suspension geometry was changed, can run radials, but bias only for 2005 through 2009. I am going on memory, but if any of this is wrong I am sure someone will jump in to correct.

I ran all Metz for the first 4-5 sets and got 17-18K front and only 7-8K rear. I recently wore out my first BT020 rear and I think it went about 13K miles (need to check my spreadsheet and post the numbers sometime). I am running all BT020 now for two reasons. One, I want to see how much shorter the front tire life is with the BT and, two, I got a really good deal on the matched set.

i will be curious to hear from someone who has tried the comander2. tire tech as come along way in 18yrs on cycle tires.. i remember when shinko tires came out everyone said you will DIE if you use that junk tire ect ect but now its a well respected bun. back in my racing days i raced a fzr400 and nobody made a sport/track tire in the 18" rear anymore. i had a cbr f3 wheel hanging on the wall so i went to work and it was alot of work but in the end i had a 17" rear i could now get sticky rubber on.

so anyway we will see and i will try it. somethings may scare me that dont scare you and vise versa and you will only ride up to the level that you are scared (your comfort zone) i find funny though that most of the post i have read have to do with the massive weight of the LT in a dresser i would call 800lbs light but you may say its a pig.

so i will make my own decision on the tire but for now lets leave it and move on ya'll:grin:

Yes, labor intensive to be sure. I am sure cost is the reason, but I sure wish BMW would attach body panels with Dzus fasteners rather than screws. They work great on airplanes. They are fast, vibration resistant and have no loose parts to keep track of. If the nine side panel screws were affixed with Dzus fasteners, it would take just seconds to remove each side panel. And the stingray should have ONE multi pin electrical connector rather than the 8 or 9 it has now. Just ridiculous.

I think every motorcycle engineering team should be required to disassemble and reassemble every new design at least 10 times before it is released for sale. And they should be required to do this on their own time (Saturday's) and the cost of every special tool required should be deducted from the salary of every engineer on the team! Do this and I guarantee you will get designs that can be easily maintained without special tools.

i once had a 85 yamaha venture royal that was a big bike. i would scrape the mud flap and floor boards all the time in the corners

this LT does have good cornering clearance as i pushed it pretty hard in the bends yesterday even though it was 32f:grin: suspension/chassie dosent wallow all around for a old 90's era bike. its pretty good design or maybe im just getting to old to know the difference.. but im sure i will get use to it and wanna upgrade the suspension. i normally use Traxxion Dynamics for custom suspension stuff good guys there. check them out if you want a custom shock ect but this is there busy season . off season for racing but they can fit you in just tell them you have a big race day coming up:wink:



as for the body work goes it isnt any worse then my stock sport bikes really. it just takes time on your first time to learn were all the fastener are. then the next time should be alot quicker

Some of the different rear tires even though are the right size can rub the swing-arm because they don't have the right curvature to match the curve in the LT swing-arm. When looking straight up from the bottom of the swing-arm the clearance should be even.
