Just got the new rear drive bearing today (19 ball FAG). A new part number is on the packaging 33 12 1 242 210. Have been told by three separate dealers that the 17 ball are no longer available unless you can find one in old stock. Got the bearing, the seal (33 12 7 663 482) and the o-ring (33 11 1 241 257) from Chicago BMW for $136.

So....how should we (or I) understand this?
Until now I have thought that the 19 ball design was changed to 17 ball in order to improve the durability. At the same time this whole change has not been public knowledge at least here in Europe. Was this 17 ball change really carried out by BMW AG and not just a "local fix" by BMW NA?
And now they are back to the 19 ball design again?

No wonder my local Finnish dealer can not find the 17 ball unit at all...

What is the truth here, I'm very confused?

Regards

I had to do mine in May at BW of San Jose. The part numbers they used were exactly the same as you got. It was a the 19 ball bearing. Total cost was $145 which includes the seals, o-ring and screws.
