My Aunt Velma, who lived in Birmingham, AL, passed away earlier today. She was 95 years old and had been in steadily declining health over the past few months. She was quite a character; always joking, quick witted, had an opinion on most things, and lived in her house on her terms up until the moment she died. While it's hard knowing she's gone, it really is better for her; she's no longer in pain and can now be at peace. I'm sure they're already laughing at her stories on the other side.

I got to see her one final time last year on my cross country trip after leaving CCR in Braselton. I had not seen her in almost 30 years, and while she was obviously older she was the same funny, sweet, wonderful woman with a gleam in her eye and a story to tell. I'm really happy that I got to see her then, I have some very fond memories from then as well as my childhood to carry with me forever.

Goodbye, Aunt Velma, I'm going to miss you. The world is a better place because you were here.

Aunt Velma

Dave,
Sorry to hear about aunt Velma. I could sense in her picture she was quite the firecracker. 95 is a full life for sure. Best wishes to you and your family.

Condolences and thanks for sharing.
It is hard to see them go, but go they must as we all will.

Great that you took the time for your visit, reminds us all to take a break from our daily rat race and say hello to those who matter in our lives before it's to late.

David,

She reminds me of somebody else...

They are never really far from your heart. It's easy to see she is a special lady. I'm very sorry for your loss.

David,

Sorry for your loss, but thanks for sharing. On my way to CCR this year I detoured to Flint Michigan to visit my grandmother's last remaining sibling. Grandma was one of thirteen raised on a Swedish homestead in Northern Minnesota. My Auntie Mae in Flint still has that twinkle in her eye and has always been a bit of a spitfire though she is now in a wheelchair in assisted living. Seeing your aunt's picture makes me regret not taking Mae's picture while I was there to capture that same twinkle your Velma had.

Thanks, Floyd. She and her sister are who I went to see before you and I met up in Birmingham at the hotel last year. That was our last face to face visit, we did talk on he phone once or twice over the past year. Mom's on the way down from Forrest City, AR to help with arrangements.

My condolences Dave. She looks like she was in good health up until the end. I agree with several others, who hope they do as well for that long. That's a good life.
