Metzeler customer service emailed me back, they will NOT be making the new "40% longer life, better grip" ME888 in a size and reinforcement for the LT. They did say that they will be continuing the ME880 in a fitment for the LT.

So, we can continue to pay more for less tire. Woohoo

Oh yeah I am going to run out and develop a new tire for a motorcycle that has been out of production for 5 YEARS. Yes they sold 'em in 09 but the last ones off the assembly line were in early 08.

The ME 880 is still available just not the new improved ME 888. (Bridgestones and Avons also)

On my LT I normally got between 10-15,000 miles out of my Metz.... Wish I got the same on my K1600! 7-10,00 is more the norm...

everyone has different riding styles, and some of us are carrying more weight...the BEST I have ever gotten out of a rear Metz is 6,000, though I average 15-16,000 on my fronts.

I had noticed a great improvement on my Metz's over the last two tire sets (within the last 9 months). Went several pairs of Avons, and loved the grip, but was getting 5K miles max. Heard the "improved" Metz were better and they were. Very little "Tar Snake Slip" (and resulting "pucker" :rolleyes: ) as before when I was using Metz in 2008.

So - does this mean they're going back to the original "hard as rocks, sucks in the twisties" compound?

I'm the same - 6k max out of a rear. However I ride 2-up a lot so that might account for it. Tire pressures always kept at 48psi and checked religiously. I'm gonna try a Bridgestone on the next round, my reasoning being if I can't do better mileage then at least I'll enjoy more grip and less tar snake reaction.

I'm really getting fed up with the squirrelly behavior of the 880. Plus the mileage has gone down over the years. I used to get 12K to 16K on the rear depending on how consistently I maintained tire pressure.

Recently I hit a little standing water in a turn at about 35mph and the damn tire kicked out. Any faster and I would have been on my ass. Guess I'll try Bridgestone next.

Metzeler rep recently gave presentation at our dealer. Said if seeking longest tire life, look on sidewall for max permitted pressure and use that all the time.

Yes, Metzeler has all kinds of new "enduro" technology, but still only sell a 20+ year-old model for my '84 G/S

I talked to the Metzeler rep at the RA Rally. He said the ME880 will be discontinued and a new tire was on its way. He did say that no new tire until the current supply is exhausted.

Just finished a nearly 5K mile ride on new 880s two up pulling a trailer. Covered 15 states and all kinds of road surfaces with temps from 36 to 99 degrees, mostly dry and sunny but sa few days of wet (36 degrees was one of them) and the tires did just fine in spite of the all of the weight. Checked the tires every third day or so and only lost 2 pounds in the rear by day 14. The tires still look new. No complaints from me.

Riding two up makes a huge difference in rear end traction. Even when weight transfers to the front, under breaking or deceleration, the passenger provides a little more pressure to keep the tire planted.

I've been focused on keeping 48lbs in the rear tire all the time but maybe that should drop down to 42lbs for those days with single rider and more aggressive intents. I wonder how much more traction is available at lower pressures?
