I am in the process of doing some major work on my 2000 K1200LT. Got it torn WAY down.

Work includes:

Complete rebuild
rebuild final drive (Done by CharlieVT)
replace all seals on transmission
rebuild forks (seals/oil)
rebuild Wilbur shocks (Ted Porter's Beemer shop in CA)
rebuild steering damper (found seals)
rewire HID with relay direct to battery
rewire PIA driving lights
Polish and rewire lights on forks
Paint lower fairing
cleanup farkle wiring under seat
clean clean clean

Anyway, I am at the point where I have everything torn apart. Most of the parts are in and I am starting to reassemble everything.

If anyone would like to come by and help/watch, feel free. I could use the company and love teaching. I hope to have her done by middle of next week.

Couple 'a questions if you don't mind. You said "complete rebuild", is that the engine too? If so, why, and what's being done? Will you use all stock parts, or any modifications, like larger fuel rail, higher compression pistons, or after-market clutch? Things like this go through my mind for my bike all the time. Would enjoy hearing what you'll do and why.

My mistake. Yes, complete engine rebuild although I am reusing most of the parts.

Reason: long story... I burned a piston (#2) through improper fuel map (2000 ecu with 05 engine) OR vacuum leak. Jury is still out on why. So basically bought a new piston and all the seals and gaskets. Changing out the ECU and putting an 05 exhaust on it too.

One thing I am doing is making sure all the pistons are exactly the same weight. Why you ask? Well, it turns out BMW has two pistons you can buy. They are based on their size, either A or B. But, they also have pistons designated by weight (+ or -). Problem is, there is no way to order a + or -. You get whatever comes.

Well, as luck would have it, my engine has + weight pistons and the one the dealer sent me was a -. I am going to weigh them all and shave a little off the heavy ones to make them all match.

I was thinking about doing a port job on the head while I had it apart but I figured I have enough work to do already with trying to get the bike back together for my upcoming trip.

Where did you find your seals? I need to do mine and I lack the knowledge where to even begin looking...:(

I found mine thru the local NAPA parts store. They are cr #3939.

You will never have a worn cylinder - the coating just does not wear. Rings shot - yes but if the cylinders ever wear larger you are now into soft aluminum as that hard coating is very thin. (At least on the LT)

So in theory, you would replace the rings and go. Not counting valves and all the other things.
How bout replacing the crankside/rod bearings?
Keep it short dont want to start a new thread.

Thanks John.

Reason I asked was because a friend of mine put some diesel in his tank and did a few miles (not many !) before coming to a stop.

He lost what seems to be compression and the dealer has told him, after stripping the motor, that he needs a new engine block.

Any thoughts ?

I would not think it would run at all on diesel. High sulpher diesel has been known to cause long term problems in BMW diesel cars with the same cylinder coating but this should not have taken out the coating on one tank of petrol/diesel mix. I would flush out the fuel system and try again to run the bike on some good petrol.

I agree with John on flushing the fuel system. To flush the entire system you need to take the tank apart (fuel pump & sending unit) wash and dry the tank. replace the fuel filter & clean the pre fuel pump filter with carb cleaner. Remove all the fuel lines including the fuel rail for the fuel injectors. Flush all the lines & fuel injector rail with gas & blow dry with compressed air. You can also get the fuel injectors cleaned & rebuilt for about $20 each. Google is your friend for getting your BOSCH fuel injectors cleaned. Clean the entire system not just part of it.
