Took the bike out for a ride yesterday evening. Got home and went to back in to my garage as usual. Put it in reverse as normal, pressed the starter button, engine revved to normal reverse RPM and moved about 5 ft, RPM dropped and it stopped. Let off the starter button and pressed again. Repeated same behavior. Did this several times to get it in the garage. Never happened before.

Has anyone seen this behavior before?

Yup. There is a speed sensor in the side of the transmission that causes this when it is either disconnected or it has failed. Not hard to get to just pull off the right lower tupperware, but you will need a cut down 5 mm Allen wrench to remove the single bolt.
