Good Morning Fellow riders

has anyone lower a LT???
I would like to drop mine a few inches to get a better balance at a Stop
as mine has taken a couple of CAT NAP on me already
with the Passenger on the rear it okay and I am able to balance and keep the my feet on the ground
without a passenger even though I have taken the preload out i can only flat 1 foot and the other on tippy toe
I have had the seat redone and brought it down as far as it can go
as I am doing the service and winter storage prep
i figures whilst i have all the body work off i can access and drop the bike

I believe in one of Kirks videos he mentions that he is installing a new set of shocks to lower an LT he is working on so it is possible. It may be fairly expensive if you have to purchase new shocks though.

I also think I have seen a bolt on u-bracket for the bottom of the rear shock but at something close to $150 if memory serves, I could buy a used shock and modify the existing bracket or make an entirely new one.

Installing Ohlins shocks lowers it somewhat.

Ohlinses (that's plural for Ohlins, right :grin: ) are adjustable lengthwise, right? At least the one I had in one of my other bikes was.
The right answer would be to call someone like Ted Porter but I am going to give you my answer also. The shock I bought is a TFX not an Ohlin and also has adjustability depending on what components are required on the ends. For the LT, the U mount takes the place of the adjustable part on other assemblies for different models so at least in my case, the shock was not adjustable other than the monster 15mm hydro preloader. I think the Ohlin is in the same boat and the only adjustment is the preloader or to replace the u mount with a shorter one to shorten the shock and still maintain the proper range of motion for the damper to not bottom or top out.

I have also seen adjustable struts between the frame and the final drive. This can adjust the height of the bike at the expense of the drive shaft u-joint angles depending on how far you need to raise or lower.

Lowering an already too low of a motorcycle (ground clearance issue) could be a problem, I scrape everything all the time with a passenger and gear, and mine is jacked up pretty high with the OEM shocks/springs.
With a 31" inseam I can barely flat foot it anyway, you do you know about the seat rear adjustment bar, right?

That is also one side effect of lowering so if you do spirited riding, maybe you should be adjusting the soles of your shoes and not the bike ;)

I would suggest trimming the seat down (provided you already have it in the lowest setting) over lowering the bike.

I was thinking of making something up or changing the rear shock mounting to drop the rear hoping the adjuster would take up the height when i'm loaded up

Here is what I mentioned earlier. An adjustable paralever arm. If you didn't go too dramatic, you could lower the back end a little and also bring it back up pretty easily if riding 2 up. You could probably make one easily to replace the static arm and it wouldn't mess with the shock travel.

The bike loaded with driver has 3.5" of ground clearance which is not enough as it is. I constantly have to be careful with speed bumps and driveways. I can imagine how lowering the bike would adversely affect its cornering ability. I think the right move is doing a mod to your seat.

It depends your definition of "too" straight up. Lowering the bike that IMHO is way too low to begin with is counterproductive and possibly unsafe. I used a 1/2" block to rest mine on on a gravel parking area and it never blew over.

The side stand would need to be professionally modified more than a 1/2" in lowering IMHO...

Ps. If I needed to lower my K-LT more than 1" to be safe and comfortable, I'd buy a different bike.
Worst case, I'd still take a little off the seat by a upholstery shop and wear some thick boots.


If the bike is lowered, wouldn't that make the bike stand up too straight with side stand?:surprise:

I have lowered my 2001 R1150RT by replacing the springs and cutting the foam out of the sides and top of the seat. Worked OK, but the seat is not as comfortable as I would like it. Did have issues with the side stand and dropped it (tipped over in the parking lot) in the fall which cost me a mirror and brake lever. Will be cutting down the side stand this winter.

I am open to any questions you have.
