Since buying my 2011 R1200R, I have never seen the low fuel warning come on. Today I had over 200+ miles on it, showed 2 bars on the fuel quantity indicator, and 45 miles to go on miles to empty. Stopped at the gas station and put 4.364 gallons in the tank. (I make it a habit to start looking for gas between 160 & 180 miles but know from experience, I can hit 200 miles before I really need to worry). Seems to me the low fuel indicator should come on before I'm below 0.4 gallons. Anyone have any more info on this

With only ca. 900 miles on my 2012 R1200R my experience is limited. However, the one time that I ran the bike to below 1 gal of fuel left in the tank, the warning light did come on. As far as I am concerned, the warning light doesn't really help, and I, like you, always watch my mileage between fills.

Somewhere around 220 miles you need to look at a gas pump.

Don't trust the fuel gauge! Many R bike owners have experienced false readings due to fuel strip failures (the fuel strip is a gadget in the gas tank that transmits the fuel level reading to the gauge).

My experience with the R1200R is that I obtain an average mpg between 46-50. Your experience may be different, depending upon how fast you ride, braking, terrain. etc. If you do the math and multiply 46 times 5 (the capacity of gallons in the tank), you get 230 miles to a tank. If you multiply 50 times 5, you get 250 miles out of a tank. Either way, you can see that you need to refuel at about the 200 mile mark, to be safe.

I set the trip odometer every time I fill up and when it gets to 200, I refuel. As a backup, I also set the fuel gauge calculator on my Garmin Zumo, each time I fill up. I have it set to alert me at 200 miles of travel, just to give me a contingency, in case I am not paying attention to the trip odometer.

More on this thread after some time off. Yesterday I got the low fuel indicator light at 210 miles and gassed up at 221.1. I put 5.197 gallons in a 4.8 gallon tank. Couple of choices her:

1. Gas pumps in AZ are off calibration
2. The tank holds more than 4.8 gallons as listed in the owner's manual
3. I'm gifted

Bottomline: My low fuel indicator works and I need to fill up at or before 200 miles

#2 is your answer..

The tank indeed holds a little more than stated in the manual..

They don't really want to to fill it FULL because you'll overload the canister and you'll be having another issue...A canisterectomy will solve that...

So, Don't overfill your tank...

200 miles is good range for a motorcycle...And nice to know you could go 250 if you needed to...My low fuel light comes on at 1 bar...
