I just bought a 2002 K1200LT, my first BMW. My legs (especially the left one when shifting) contact the chrome bar below the knee pads when riding. Its killing my shins. I tried the seat in both positions and found the lower position to work better. I'm 6'3". Anyone else had this problem? Any suggestions?

Yep, we need to either shorten the length of your legs from your hips to your knees OR make the lumbar area in your seat more easily compressed so you can sit back farther - either of which will cost you an arm and a (cough) leg. :D

That's what you get for buying a BMW! :bmw: (Bring More Wampum)

Jamie, hope the clutch problem worked out OK. As for hitting your left shin, I'm 6'4" and have not had that problem yet. I also ride with the seat in the lower position, and when I'm seated on the bike my lower leg goes back at an angle toward the rear of the bike from the knee to the foot. Yours must be going down pretty straight? So I wonder if your foot is riding forward on the footpeg? Or if the previous owner installed the footpeg lowering and forwarding aftermarket brackets? Try riding with only the ball of your foot on the footpeg. That's the only thing I can think of. Good luck.

It is worse on the left side when I am shifting gears.

I'm 6'4" and havent had the problem you disscuss. I have added the lowering kit for the pegs which gives me a bit mor relaxed postion for the long haul.

Then bear in mind that you will lose ground clearance and therefore scrape the pegs a lot sooner, especially with 2 up.
If you are OK with that, then go ahead with the lowered pegs, making sure to re-adjust the rear brake pedal and brake light switch (both under the right side peg plate) and also readjust the shifter linkage (under the left side peg plate).
On my '99 I also installed a shifter extender and replaced the brake pedal (both from iliumworks click-here in addition to the lowered pegs from Suburban machinery and-here ).
If you need to regain the ground clearance you will need to look at aftermarket shooks that offer different heights such as Olin.
All that money spent... because of your shins!!!:eek: Bad shins! Bad!:mad:

I think that peg lowering kit also moves it forward, as well as down. Forward would worsen your problem. Seems to me you need to move the peg and or shit lever back. Are you wearing riding boots? That may help protect the shin.

I'm 6'3" and have never made contact with that part of the bike, when riding, shifting or otherwise. Can you describe a little better your seating position and how your feet are positioned on the peg when riding? Also, what is your inseam? If you have very long legs I could see this as a possibility. Is your bike seat stock?

Howdy Jamie,

I am 6'4" with a 34+" inseam and have had the experience you describe. Sounds odd that you have this issue. Perhaps a photo might help identify the cause.

I ride with the balls of my feat on the footrest, or will slide my foot back and rest my heels on the very front of the large passenger rest.

I am 6'5" with 34+ inseam and I too had this issue when I first started to ride my LT. I have since lowered the pegs and adjusted my riding style.

My only issue now is I have Mic-o_pegs which will put my feet right where I want to stretch out, but again, my chins hit the wings just like you describe.

I am in the queue for a Day Long seat and I am hoping that the fact that they can move the seat back a couple of inches will fix that last issue.

Stock seat set at low. 33' inseam. Didn't know the pegs and shift lever could be shifted.
