My LT is killing it's battery in the garage in a few days. I've been leaving it in the "off" position, not in the "locked" position. I'm sure all my accessories are turned off. Is my problem the fact that I don't go all the way to "lock"?

I'm doing the same thing with the CLC and it doesn't have a problem!

I would check the vanity light in the rear top case.
I found mine was left on a few times.
Just a shot in the dark. :)

Good thing to remember, but, my case is off right now!

I found my battery dead after installing an IceLink, even though the iPod was not connected to the bike at the time. I ended up buying a Battery Tender just for peace of mind.

I know the map light power cuts off when the bars are locked. There may be other circuits as well but I don't know which ones. Hard to believe the digital clock or the radio is drawing enough to drain your battery, but this is a pretty common complaint.

Some of the very early radios had a firmware flaw that would drain a battery very quickly, but I think they sorted that out in the first model year.

I always lock my BMW motorcycles simply because off leaves power on to various accessories and you just never know what might be own drawing parasitic power.

I also use a battery tender and leave it on the motorcycle I am riding less just to keep the battery fully charged. A battery on a trickle charger will last much longer than one that continuously cycles from low voltage (drain) to high (under charge). In fact, I'm thinking of buying another battery tender just to keep the other one fully charged when not in use. Chargers are cheap compared to replacement batteries.

BTW: If you really want to find out if you have accessories on in the off position, it's pretty easy to connect a volt meter with a built-in current shunt to oneof the battery connectors and measure the actual draw. Radio Shack sells quite a few models with up to a 20 amp current capacity. I think the one I bought only cost $30 when I bought it.

The K1200LT takes battery draining to a whole new level. The only sure cure is to keep a Battery Tender hooked up whenever you're not riding it daily. I don't think I could go more than 3 or 4 days without the battery being dead on my '02.

There is a little switch that 'kills the light' once the trunk is closed, even if the switch is in the 'ON' position.. But perhaps you should crawl inside and have someone close you in just to make for sure for sure. :p

Oh ya I bet you also think the light in the fridge goes off when you close the door too :D

Even with the key OFF, you still have power to the radio, alarm, clock, etc. So the safest thing is to turn the key to LOCK if it will sit for a few days. If it'll sit for a week or more, then a battery tender is a good idea.

I locked the forks on my '02 every time I parked the bike, except maybe when fueling or grabbing a quick lunch. I could leave it sit for 2 weeks and still be able to start it afterwards.

And yes, the trunk light does have a cutoff switch when closed, but I believe that started somewhere around '02. :)
