Has anyone tried a 120/90 size front tire on the k1200lt? Or know if it will fit?
Thanks

johnnya, what is your motivation for using a different sized tire? There are many choices in the proper size and speed rating for the front. The rear, not so many.

Was thinking about trying the Shinko 777 (front and rear), and they don't make the 120/70 for the front.
Didn't want to mix&match brands

People mix and match brands all the time especially on the LT seeing we have several front choices and so few rear choices. There are several good tire threads on this forum that discuss the options. The PR4GT is probably in my future as it is a hybrid bias/radial design I currently have a BT-023 and it rides fine but whines during hard engine braking so I will hope it doesn't last too long ;) Some use the BT-020 rear and an Avon Roadrider front which is what I was trying to do before I had a wheel issue and had to get a tire fast. It is more important to have a proper fitment than try and keep with the same brand that doesn't make one or the other properly sized and rated for your bike. I would recommend you do a little more research and find something properly fitted and rated and not worry about them being different makes. Also, try and ignore people putting tires on that are not properly rated especially for the rear of the LT.

I tried different tire sizes on my GTL, with varying results.

The commonly available 130/80-17 tires are way too tall, and I had to remove the front fender entirely to make it work. OK for a test, but not OK for the long term.

A 120/80-17 tire also proved too tall, rubbing a hole in my fender.

A 130/70-17 tire is harder to find, but fit without any issues.

Note that all of these are rear fitment tires, except the 120/80-17 which is marked as front/rear (by changing mounting direction and thus tread direction).

Also note that the 130/80-17 and 120/80-17 tires are much taller, which messed with the wheel speed sensors and threw off the ABS and Traction Control. The 130/70-17 is closer to the stock 120/70-17 size, and thus had a minimal effect on the wheel speed sensors.

I was looking for higher front tire mileage to go with my dark side rear tires, but in the end the 130/70-17 only got about 10,000 miles. Better than before, but not the 15,000+ miles I was hoping for.

I've now switched to the Avon Storm 3D X-M tires, which claim a 15,000 mile guarantee. That guarantee requires purchase and installation from an authorized Avon dealer, and gives a credit towards a new tire if they fall short on mileage. It was much cheaper to just buy them online and have them installed locally, so I'll just run these out and see how they perform for my specific riding style.

Note that the Storm 3D X-M tires are available in the stock LT sizes and weight ratings.

These are the radial tires (Storm 3D X-M tires), Not sure if I wanted to go with the radial.

Since you haven't specified what year your LT is, radials are only recommended/approved for the earlier model LTs, not the '05-'09 years... I just used either the Bridgestone or Metzler versions on the front of my '07, and was not afraid to mix or match them with each other. Towards the end of my ownership of the LT, I decided to stay with the Metzler on the front and Bridgestone on the rear.:bmw:

Sorry about that, my LT is a 1999, I think I am going to go with the Avon roadrider in the front and a shinko 777 HD in the rear. I will let you'all now what I think.
Thanks for all the info!!!
