Hi, I bought a 99 K1200 LT with 57k on it from a dealer in NH that will store it for the winter, and I will fly in and drive it back in the spring (2200 mile ride). I will have them do a full service before I pick it up. The bike clears the NH inspection and they replaced the front tire and fork seals. There was some cosmetic damage to the left side fairing which I am having repaired otherwise the bike is good. FD is good. I have read the brake lines are a problem on these bikes. They quoted $1k to $1200 to replace them if I wanted, but they seem in otherwise good condition. Does the price seem right and is it necessary if things look good?

Tatonka - I've got a '99. My rear brake went soft about 1000 miles from home. I finished the trip without the rear brake. When I got home I found the ABS to master cylinder line leaking. I just bought and installed (yesterday) a set of Spiegler brake lines. I paid about $260 for a complete set. Installation wasn't hard. $1000 to $1200 seems a bit high.

I would check what they get per hour. Then see what the time est. is. The parts and labor is what they should be charging.

Others will chime.

The quote you got from the dealer is probably based on genuine BMW brake lines. According to MAX BMW fiche, the 4 front and rear lines and washers for your bike would cost about $340 before taxes. Spieglers are about $100 less and, in my opinion, higher quality and should last the life of the bike. :bmw:

if you try to replace everything you think might go wrong on this bike you are going to empty your bank account, my advice is ride it and when it breaks fix it. There seems to be a lot of new riders reading up on here about what might go wrong instead of just enjoying the bike.

That's way to much for that job. Just buy the Spiegler brake lines and take them with you on your return trip in case you spring a leak and replace as needed. Watch the videos on line and / or pay a willing cycle dealer on your route to get you on the road again. It's not a big job for an experienced mechanic I would think. **** luck.

The LT is a great bike, but it isn't getting to be any younger.
It is much better economy to do as much work as you can yourself, and what you don't feel comfortable with, get help from a friend or a trusted shop.

We just had a Guy get rid of an LT. One of the reasons was an expected cost of maintenance.

Wait till he takes that Triumph to the Dealer.

I would subscribe to this on most things with the LT but on a 99, if the brake lines are original, i would replace those before they burst at some inopportune time and put you in harms way. You know they are going to and likely soon and yes, that estimate sounds rather high.
