Hello all,

My 2000 LT had the exhaust replaced around 84,000 right before I purchased it because it was cracked, and now my 03 has cracked right between the converter and the muffler and I have to weld it. One of the local shops parts guys said he had his welded too. Is this a common problem ?

Every LT I have looked under has a very small hole in the rear of the collector box. Mine hasn't got any bigger in years, but it seems a weak point.

I would call it fairly common, I have welded two and I see my current LT is starting to crack. Now on the up side if you do a good job and add a small metal brace when welding it should last 100K or so.

I would not call it a "Common" problem but it has been reported a few times.
I wouldn't call it 'common' either, based on the total number of LTs on the road from the earlier model years - however:

Ole Toad's cracked.
Grif's cracked.
Woody's cracked.
Dave Moores' cracked.
Bert's cracked.
And all at the same joint, near a weld.

And I have two in my storage unit that were cracked, and one that Shreeve has that might be cracked (you diagnosed a crack in that one yet, Stevie?).

So - if you go on that limited scenario, you *could* say it's common - at least locally!! :histerica ;)

I should have noted that the strap which seems to have been put on to stop such a problem............is cracked...........so much for that measure of reinforcement !

Mine cracked at 130k, right where the 4 come together, Almost impossible to weld.
Finally bought a good used one from Hans, thanks. NP the last 40k. Be careful taking it off the back is fairly heavy.

Does anyone have a pic of a crack or where this occurs? I don't mean men's ass cracks either. Womens ass cracks ok though.
I have a rattle and have retorqued all of the header bolts. Just would like to check mine.
Thanks all

I'll take some pics before I weld it tonight and try to get them posted soon.

Mine cracked. Had it welded. Good as new.

Remember, the exhaust is STAINLESS STEEL and requires special welding.

It doesn't surprise me that the exhaust systems fracture at the welds. Way before this post I have been looking at the exhaust pictures on this forum. Have you looked at the pictures of factory exhaust welds posted on this site? The welds look like they were done by drunk primates (don't mean to offend any drunk primates!). They look terrible, splattered, all globbed up and thick. Horrible! Believe me, I'm no welder but I could do at least as badly!

Any idea why BMW puts them on the road like this?

Mine was very neatly welded. I think it just nneds to be thicker or have another hanger to reduce the stress on that point. Obviously they added that strap to try to stop it from cracking there but the stress was great enough to break the strap.

Funny, I thought the same thing. I am a certified stick welder. Haven't welded too much thin stuff, but I could do a lot better than those pics. Obviously not done by robots.

Mine cracked/broke near the weld joints on my 2000, a month after it's 6th birthday, with just over 70k on the clock. My fix: Remus - still going fine after almost 30k more (no stake in the company). The only problem with it is that when I change the rear tire/pull wheel off, need to take it off as well due to clearance problems.

Mine cracked sometime last season and you could hear it when cold and when it heated up the crack closed so you couldn't hear it. Sometimes, I got the tell tale back fire when I let off of the throttle last fall. Had the exhaust welded this winter, good as new.

Mine is cracked same place same strap. Cracked 2/3 of the way around. I just passed 36,000 miles. I assume it's been cracked for awhile though it hasn't been noisy.
