This FD is off a 2000 with about 50K miles.

The owner, JB, felt a wobble about 1 mile from home and and said limped back at about 10 mph.
Existing shims were 0.75mm.
My calculations using both DMan's dial indicator method, and the Service Manual depth micrometer method gave 0.45mm shiming.
That suggests an excess preload of 0.30 mm.
Pics of the races and one of the balls attached.

Curtis, do you think the balls go first and take out the race, or vis-versa?
I don't think it matters...

But I think the races go first. I say that because I have cut open upwards of 30 failed bearings, and some of those which were caught early by the owner had spalling of the races but no signs on the balls. I've seen several cases like that. I don't recall ever seeing a case where the balls were visibly damaged but the races were intact.
Races seem to go first.

And what are we going to do with that information?
