I sold my 2002 this afternoon. $7200. I may be sorry later but right now I'm not. Too much maintenance cost. The ABS pump was the last straw for me. I should have known when you have to remove the gas tank to replace the air filter that something was wrong? Don't get me wrong, it's the best riding bike I've ever had, just to much that can and does seem to go wrong. Don't know what I'll replace it with. The 1600 might not be bad. I guess I'll wait a while and see what goes wrong with them. I do like reading here so I'll keep up with everything. Thanks for all the help everyone has given.

Sounds like maybe you should wait on the GTL until, say, 2021.

I bought my LT in 2009, and according to my friend in the Fatherland, buying @ the end of the engineering cycle is a smart thing to do.

I just keep rolling up the smile miles. :)

The GTL looks like a fine MC, but I doubt service is going to be any less complicated or costly.

Not trying to be an a$$wipe but have you ever seen the procedure to change the air filter on a GL1800 GoldWing? The ONLY thing that makes the maintenance on the LT and the GoldWing time consuming is what the engineers had to do to keep everything inside the tupperware. The air filter on a Harley, on the other hand, takes less than 10 minutes. Not near the fairing coverage even on their full dressers. If you measure the value of a machine on how easy it is to change the air filter then the Harley might be a great fit.

As for the ABS pump going out on you . That just plain sucks!

I'll stick with the early model LT's.

Ronnie, Congratulations / Sympathies ! I feel your pain /pleasure on the sale of your bike. Looks like you did $600 better then me on the sale. How many mile were on your bike when you sold it? But do you still have visitation rights!

Yes, but look how hard it is to CLEAN all that exposed crap.

Have you ever replaced the drive belt on a Harley? I did on my Son in Law's Heritage Classic. A real witch of a job. I could replace two final drives on LT's easier and in less time. Of course BMW final drives may need replacing more often than Harley Drive belts. :rotf:

Cleaning is the reason why I don't have a HD. I love the sound and local rides are fun, but there is just way too much to clean and polish.

Aside from the BMW ride, I really liked the fact that my green K1200LT didn't show dirt and dust and when necessary, it was so easy to keep clean.

It probably never took me more than 30 minutes to get it reasonably clean and dry. My buddies seem to spend hours keeping them clean, even 1/2 way through a ride.

I used to keep a small California Duster (at least I think that's what it's called), in the side bag on the LT. A quick once over (2-3 minutes) and the bike is relatively clean for a ride. It gets the dust off from it sitting in the garage.

I don't think my bike has sat long enough to get dusty, too many miles and smiles. I will take the road dirt over dust any day.

How were you able to sell it? I've been trying to sell/trade my '04 for over a year. Where did you advertize it?

I listed it with craigs list. It had 27,200 miles and it sold for $7000. It took three weeks to sell. I paid $9500 for it 3 years ago. The $3600 I spent on the ABS pump is what made me sell it. I couldn't take a chance on a clutch or FD going out. I don't know what I'll replace it with but I'm looking. I did ride an Ultra Classic but it's not the ride a BMW is. I might ride a gold wing and see what it's like. Who knows what I'll end up with.

Ronnie, you should be able to replace your LT with a similar mileage Wing for between $14,000 and $18,000.

When I found my LT I was very close to pulling the trigger in a Kawasaki Concours. Very nice rides.
