Hey All;


Attached is the quick video of changing the fuel filter without removing the tank.
NOW, this is just a quick way to do it if don't have the time to remove all the tupperware and removing the tank. I'm just showing how I do it between major service. I take no responsibility for this method. Its better to do it during full service.
Take right side panels off, remove the engine guard and the video is self explanatory.
I run the tank to as low as I can, so i don't strand myself, where the dashes come up on your fuel computer. Bike is on the side stand, the fuel will run to the left side.
You will have a very small amount of fuel come out, so DO NOT do it when engine is warm/hot. Dont blink, it takes longer to take the tupperware off.

You still had to take all the tupperware off both sides - including the stingray, not to mention the large crossbar and right side tip over bar. Everything you would normally need to do.

The only thing different you did was raise the tank off the frame (when it is already completely disconnected) and propped it up instead of sliding it back and removing it.

You got doused with gasoline in the bargain when you unscrewed the large nut on the bottom - which you obviously already pre-drained before you started filming to avoid the embarrassing flood.

Why, you even said on Ocrtober 23, 2009 when describing your miracle: "You will lose about a cup of fuel." Why then were there only a few drops??

You still never explained exactly how the fuel can "drain" to the left side of the tank by putting it on the side stand. Not possible. :rolleyes:

While watching the video I was wondering how it was only finger tight and kept fuel in it. :rolleyes:

...So, how do you remove the bolt on the left side of the "fixing bridge" - the large bracket - that secures and protects the top of the tank without taking the left side tupperware off??

....and without taking the sting ray completely off you can't possibly raise the tank at all. You can't access and remove the two front 6X16 hex head bolts that hold the front of the bracket in place. Without removing them it is impossible to move the tank up.

I'm just trying to figure out how you can possibly do this - by magic? :think:

Like I said, the ONLY thing you've done different is leave the tank in place, propped up. It's already completely released. You have to go through every single step as described in the BMW maintenance manual in order to even prop it up and then get LOTS of gasoline splashed all over your hands, the engine and floor. Why would you go to all this trouble and not take the tank off the bike, stick it sideways on your bench and then unscrew the bottom nut? That must take - oh - an extra 30 seconds or so. A small price to pay for not having to clean up a huge and toxic mess...

There's certainly no time savings with your method and it probably takes even longer than usual - especially when you've got to spend extra time cleaning up spilled fuel. Once again quoting you from October of 2009 the whole process takes: "less than an hour". :confused:

There is NO shortcut and your video doesn't do ANY credence to what you have claimed. It is only a prepared self-aggrandizing "snippet" and a small part of a long and laborious procedure that you have chosen to omit in an attempt to prove your point.

Which, of course, is pointless.

With all due respect: Absolutely the most unnecessary, risky & "Why on earth would I..." type of procedure... Just my opinion of course...

And as a piece of information: Removing the engine guard might in worst case be almost impossible without breaking/cutting it. Tight fit together with some rust really glues the guard in to the frame so one needs to cut it to be able to get it off in two pieces. :confused:

Take another look Ron, the seat frame is still bolted on. The tank is not raised. He did unbolt the side frame (just like you do for the valve check on the other side). But I see no reason to do all this either for a normal service as the fuel filter gets changed along with the air filter. Could be handy on the side of the road if the filter does get clogged though.

Whencher I'm not but have done plumbing under the face bowl and kitchen sink and both took longer than that to remove the central lock ring with a tool of course.
Is one guy selling snake oil and unfortunately got called in the 2nd post by a guy who's shown to have the knowledge and experience of this procedure and is very willing to help us not fall for it. Thanks RON. Perhaps a disclaimer "don't try this at home"

I just cut a hole in the right side of my fuel cell and replaced the filter. Then I welded it back up with some leftover fiberbglass rods I had with the welder set on Low.......... ;)

Um, how dirty is your gasoline that you have to replace the fuel filter more frequently than every 12,000 miles? Perhaps trying Shell or one of the top tier gasolines instead of "Bubba's gasoline and shit" might save you some dirty hands?

And in the second part where the beginning is shown, it's very thorough, although I think I missed that part, but I did watch it again and again.

What I don't understand is the part in the middle where the method is really well documented. I mean, who could misunderstanding that? I certainly did.

I thought: "heck, I could do that." but why would anyone want? I'm sure you would too.

I'm reminded of the woman who walked into a bar and ordered a double entendre, and so the bartender gave her one.

It is a software problem, but not the forum software. :histerica

It is commentary regarding the video found at the start of this thread which is a remarkable contribution. Perhaps it will eventually be added to the hall of wisdom.

I know that Zeke was trying to show that the fuel filter can be changed with less trouble if needed . I also believe that it is totally ridiculous to change a filter every 12K. My truck now has 169K miles on it without a fuel filter change. How many LT's have been stranded due to a clogged filter that did not recently get bad gas. A new filter just before getting bad gas won't help that.

With that said...I would change the filter at a more reasonable time and not necessarily when I am changing an air filter. At 164k I had changed 2 of them without a problem.

The man is just trying to contribute to the forum. I have a very hard time watching him be blasted by the non believers. He was challenged on this subject and provided proof of his procedure.

This forum just isn't what it use to be...I have been here a very long time and hate to see it lose what it once had...courtesy and helpfulness.

I'm with ya on frequency of fuel filter change - ole Toad has had 1 fuel filter change; at roughly 36k - prolly wuzn't necessary then tho. Got 140,000 now, so think I'll change prior to 150K, just for s & g.
