Well I went to buy a 2005 LT today. What a waste of my time. It ran so rich the exhaust had smoke almost like a blow head gasket, probably an O2 sensor, the rear rotor was cow belling, the front end clunked over every bump in the road, the headlight was a cheap Chinese HID and it did not work, and it looked like it had slide 100 yards down the road on it's right side.
All of this was fixable for the right price, then they said it had a rebuilt title:mad: I left after that.
It seems that just when I get the money and time to find a nice LT, I run into the ones I want being sold, or being garbage.
I will just keep looking.

You're right, keep looking. Good bikes are out there at good prices. I bought a 2005 less than a year ago, with 12000 miles, and I remain very happy with it.
If you want a touring bike, in my opinion, it can't be beat.

I've purchased three bikes long distance and here is what I have found. The good ones will gladly send you extra photos on request.
If you can't see the right side of the bike in the original photos, there's usually a reason.
A good candid conversation goes a long way. Letting them know up front what constitutes "great condition" in your mind (and wallet) is a "great idea".
Asking those simple questions such as does it have any scrape marks, ever wrecked, ever dropped, etc. will help you cull out the bad ones.

Well, i found a nice 2000 that I am going to look at on Saturday. Private owner, lots of farkles, 2 owner bike. Both owners seem to have loved on it and I think the first owner was a member here, I see several upgrades done that I have seen posted here. One is the Goldwing rack, the other is a set of Goldwing style Hwy pegs I saw here.
Good signs that it was owned by someone that cared for it.
It has 50K on it and lots of new stuff. I am hopeful.

Not to confuse you and perhaps you already know that, but the 2005 models had some design changes, including:

  • electrohydraulic center stand
  • increased engine power
  • revised instrument cluster
  • separate high beam lens (also an optional HID Xenon low beam)
  • revised steering geometry
Some like the upgrades, some don't. I don't consider any of these a "must have" though. The condition of the bike, the maintenance history and the options fitted should probably be the determinants of the price, more so than the mileage and the model year.

For wat it's worth, I think the 2000 is a great model year because it still has the old ABS II whcih means brakes still work if the ABS part goes out. On the other hand, that is the only advantage over a 2005+ that it has.

In addition to the enhancements Andres noted above, I think the styling changes to the 2005 (radiator outlet treatment, front fender, that little chrome trim thingy on the top case) really class it up a lot and make it look more modern than the Y2K.

The biggest and best enhancement to the 2005+ IMO is not the center stand through, it's the instrument cluster with the integrated display, and the compuer button location on the handlebars. After a couple years with my Y2K I would switch to a 2005+ for this alone if I was in the market for a replacement K1200LT.

Again, I agree with Andres, the most important thing is condition of the bike. I wouldn't hesitate to buy an LT with 100k on the clock if it had been well mainained by a competent person and ridden by a competent rider, but I would shutter at the thought of buying a garage queen owned by an idiot and not properly maintained - that's just trouble waiting to happen.

Uh, the 2000 also has a computer button on the handlebar by the throttle....just sayin" and as far as the instrument cluster, is there any information on there that you can't find on the Y2K?
I think the ABS is reason enough to take a good look at the '99 thru early '01, look at the price and difficulty in replacing that power assisted ABS unit...rather use that money to rebuild my FD, and take a trip all across the US and Canada!

Plus my 2k does not have that stupid central locking system to go wrong or that lift deal that can cause more probs then it's worth. If you can't put it up on the stand then you should not drive it. Just my thoughts..lol.

I have bought a number of bikes long-distance. I have ALWAYS had someone I know and trust, that lives near the bikes, go look at them AND RIDE THEM. I have never been surprised when I got there, money in hand, to pick the bike up.

This forum is a great resource for that.

I was referring to the integrated display on 05+ that has the BC and radio info front and center with the other dials. As for the button, I just find it easier to take my left hand off the handgrip to reach and press buttons than trying to fingerhold the throttle while reaching over with my thumb to press the BC button, and I think the radio display on the '00 is farther away from the road than it should be. Also, if you mount gizmos or cups on the left handlebar it can obscure that little BC display. Not a big deal but one little ergonomic issue that I notice more often than I should. I've never tried out an 05+ but it seems that all those details have been sorted out.

The braking system is really the only drawback I see on the '05+ (and yes I know it was introduced on '01 models but since I am comparing my '00 to '05+...), but that is just my opinion.

There's an '03 at the Indian/Polaris dealer in Belmont, NC that looks good. Have no idea why anyone would want to trade one for an Indian or a Polaris/Victory but to each their own.

I bought my 05 LT last year with 10,000 miles on it. I had a 2001 model that I bought new. The 05 with all it's nice upgrades is worth getting. That hydro center-stand is a very nice feature to have as is the central locks system.
