A few days ago someone asked: how do you change the transmission oil?
So while I was doing mine today I took a couple of pictures,
just to help some of the new guys out.



The only “special” tool required is a 14 mm allen wrench,
you can pick up a set of three ½" drive at Auto Zone for around 7 or 8 bucks,
some entrepreneur is selling that same set on E-bay for $25.
I ended up knocking the allen wrench “stub” out of the socket and using it with a 14 mm box end wrench.
An empty oil “bottle” cut up makes the draining process a lot neater.



My LT has a Bushtec trailer hitch, which must be removed first,
next remove the right side riders foot peg plate, three allen bolts and two torx screws.



There you'll find the transmission "fill plug"



Remove the exhaust system “hanger” bracket two allen bolts,
one directly underneath the drain plug,
the other is accessible from the left side of the motorcycle,
look way up under there and you’ll see it.



Loosen the drain plug, slide a 14 mm box end wrench over the allen socket,
now shove the allen socket up into the drain plug and “break it loose”
Position the “modified” oil “bottle” under and continue loosening the drain plug.



You can carefully measure out 600-750 ml or 20.3-25.4 oz of gear oil
or you can just fill it until the fluid “overflows” out of the fill plug,
the proper fluid level is even with the bottom of the fill plug.

trans service little different way

Hi There. here is a little different and i feel easier way to service trans.
every thing is correct with your explanation,I do a thing different, put the bike on its side stand then there is no interference from the centre stand, no special container is needed. after draining the major amount out, just stand the bike up for a few seconds. to get what ever residual left, then put bike back on to side stand. and reinstall as required. You can see better and there is nothing in the way.
Also use a small bungee cord to hold the foot rest out of the way. do not hang it from the handle bars, will stress lines too much. just tie it off in the forward direction. learned that the hard way, it loosened the lines and i had a slight brake fluid leak.

P/S my bike is a 2002, do not know if this will work with power centre stand

If that's what works for you than that is a good thing :)

The power center stand does take up a little more space than the manual one, but the "real" issue is that I use a lift to elevate my bike so I can "comfortably" sit next to it to do my oil change.
Your way might be fine if you don't mind laying on the ground next to the bike,
I'd rather not.
