A few days ago someone asked: how do you change the transmission oil?
So while I was doing mine today I took a couple of pictures,
just to help some of the new guys out.

The only “special” tool required is a 14 mm allen wrench,
you can pick up a set of three ½" drive at Auto Zone for around 7 or 8 bucks,
some entrepreneur is selling that same set on E-bay for $25.
I ended up knocking the allen wrench “stub” out of the socket and using it with a 14 mm box end wrench.
An empty oil “bottle” cut up makes the draining process a lot neater.

My LT has a Bushtec trailer hitch, which must be removed first,
next remove the right side riders foot peg plate, three allen bolts and two torx screws.

There you'll find the transmission "fill plug"

Remove the exhaust system “hanger” bracket two allen bolts,
one directly underneath the drain plug,
the other is accessible from the left side of the motorcycle,
look way up under there and you’ll see it.

Loosen the drain plug, slide a 14 mm box end wrench over the allen socket,
now shove the allen socket up into the drain plug and “break it loose”
Position the “modified” oil “bottle” under and continue loosening the drain plug.

You can carefully measure out 600-750 ml or 20.3-25.4 oz of gear oil
or you can just fill it until the fluid “overflows” out of the fill plug,
the proper fluid level is even with the bottom of the fill plug.

Don't think it's you, Hans. I don't see 'em either. Just the red X in the two-sided box thangie. Pretty sure it's my browser settings that I tried tweaking coupla days ago. Got some of the stuff back (like the avatars and home page photos that went south), butt some other thangs are still AFU.

I put the thumbnails back on the bottom, did that help?
I got the thumbnails. Still see only the red X 'tween the paragraphs above tho. Good pix, by the way.

The modified oil bottle thingy looks like it may keep me from storing the old oil on my driveway! The cut out paper drain thingy BMW tells you to make always seems to fall out just as the oil starts to drain. Thanks for the info.

The credit for the oil bottle "thingy" goes to the mechanic at BMW of Bentonville Arkansas,
while they were putting a back tire on for me,
I noticed he was using a "modified" oil bottle to put bolts and nuts in,
that was one of those hmmn "why didn't I think of that" moments,
been finding "other" uses for them ever since

Dead Link Above - But the photos work

Hi Hans,

The link you just posted is the bad one... The thread we are on now is the one that works... Very nice photos. Thanks for your hard work... I am still debating whether or not to do my next transmission oil change myself or let the dealer do it... (i don't have a lift)

Don't need a lift - just newspaper

It is not too hard to do without a lift. Just a pad for your knee and cat litter box filler or newspapers for the little spills. It's not too hard to catch either. Just go slow and follow the great instructions on this site.

Thank you for posting this with pictures. I would not have found the transmission drain plug without it. I performed the transmission oil change today for the first time. Your pictures don't display all the road grime and caked on salt that I found on the bottom of my bike and the procedure didn't mention that I may need to run to Sears to buy a much longer 14mm wrench in order to crack that nut loose, but I was able to figure a few things out on my own.

Many thanks for this useful post.

Next week....the brake bleeding begins.

Keep us posted on how the brake bleed goes - I also have an '02 with the linked ABS and am reluctant to tackle THAT job...

One thing to note when changing the trans fluid is that the trans drain plug is the only one on the bike that does not have a crush washer. After changing the other fluids I was convinced the trans drain crush washer fell off, only to find out from the forum members that there wasn't one.

I have the Sayeg videos and the owners manual. Both are good about telling you to replace all crush washers, but niether even mention there isn't one on the trans.

To Hans:
I'm just curious to what program you used to add your text & arrows to the very nice pics you took. That would help a lot of us (me thinks) in posting in the future....
