I have had the top case off a few times. The only problem is that every time I do, my wife wants to go for a ride. I agree, the bike handles very nicely with out that case....

On that note, is there a passenger backrest without the case.

Take my top case of once in a while and in my feeling the handling is far better.
To the question if there is a passenger back rest on the market, yes it is. I thing is a Backrest model by A&S BMW Parts

BAK-K12LT-Passenger

This is how it looks on my LT

I take mine off fairly often and replace it with a rack. The case is in the 30 to 35 pound range and sits high on the bike. I like it better off, but then I have to strap my man bag to the seat or rack exposed to the weather.
