I just got an 05 LT two weeks ago and want to change the transmission oil .How do I do it and what weight syn. {Amsoil} oil do I use ?? I understand the same oil is used in the rear drive, is that correct ? :confused:

Amsoil 75W90 Severe Gear Lube is happily used by many members here in the transmission and the rear drive.

If you can't find what you're looking for in this site, the Clymer manual has step by step instructions. The rear drive and tranny fluid are one in the same. It's not hard. I just did mine at the same time as the oil and rear drive change.

While not hard to do, getting to the tranny drain bolt is a real PITA if you don't have the bike on a lift... (Guess what I want for Christmas...!:rolleyes: :D )

You do need a 14mm hex socket or allen wrench to change to Transmission fluid. Sometimes those are hard to find. Also, for someone not familar with the LT, I found the video's by Paul Sayegh to be wonderfully instructive.

As for the hex socket for removing the drain pan, I found myself in a similar situationj, too late and too grungy in the evening to go tool shopping. I took two 9/16" (wrench size - 3/8" bolt) nuts, jammed them together on a bolt and used that to remove the plug.

Make some sort of drain to help guide the oil onto the surface below the bike. Generally NOT the drain pan... : P The CD manual has a great diagram of an ideal drain piece, but it only sorta worked for me....

One quart of oil will do the trans and rear drive, but synthetic make the trans shift better, but is not necessarily recommended for all years of final drive. Decide for yourself.
