Greetings folks,
My wife and I will be driving (no bike, ugh...) up the coast on Hwy 1 from Nor Cal to Ashland, OR in May. Any suggestions for motels/hotels to stay at on the way? In Ashland, someplace upscale but not $300 a night? Great restaurants along the way?

Not sure where you are stopping but have an operation I visit in Eureka 3-4 times a year and stay at the Bayshore Inn. Very well appointed and very reasonable in price.

If you want a different sort of dining experience while in Eureka, take the bridge over to Samoa and try the Samoa Cookhouse. It's a restored logging camp dining room with an all you can eat family style dinners. Usually two different entrees each night. Definitely worth a stop. They also have breakfast and lunch. Bring an appetite!

The Bards Inn, Best Western in downtown Ashland is a great choice. Within walking distance of everything , and across the street from Lithia Park and the Shakespeare Festival. Dont know the Winter rates, but the summer rates are $100 to $120

Also in Eureka, as you drive thru town North on 101, it becomes a one way and on your left is Bless My Soul Cajun food. Best I've eaten outside of Nawlins.
Just as you enter Eureka on your left is a big coffee pot espresso stand, on the right, atop a hill is a motel with a great view, really nice rooms, and reasonable prices.
I guess you'll be taking 199 from 101 to Grants Pass......watch for snow.

Lost Coast Brewery

One other item I neglected to mention is the Lost Coast Brewery in downtown Eureka. Several very nice brews and if you happen to like one in particular, they sell full cases of "seconds" for a very reasonable price. The label may be crooked or printed strangely on the bottles but the beer is the exactly the same. I particularly like the Great White and the Downtown Brown myself. The food is pretty good too but more of a luncheon fare.

If you are interested in seafood and white tableclothes, the Sea Grill is a good choice. More upscale and priced to match but very good just the same.
