I recently posted an article about upgrading to HID's or after market bulbs like the Phillips extreme. The unanimous opinion was HID are far superior. However to confuse matters I have seen various articles that state they may not be legal in the UK and an MOT failure. Have any of you got HID's and passed an MOT with them?

There have been a couple of discussions on this topic over on f800riders.org. There are a lot of UK-based 800 riders active on that board.

One, Pat H, is very active and mentioned that when he went in for his MOT he would just pop out the HID bulb and reinstall his OEM. He said that he had never been stopped or questioned by the authorities.

I understand that they are illegal (as a retrofit) in all EU countries. But its easy enough to plug the old bulb back in for the MOT or similar European inspections. BTW same in the US but enforcement is minimal.

Likewise - I have HID on my low beam, an upgraded High Beam halogen bulb and LED daylight running lights at the front and had no issues on the last three MOT's - as long as the alignment is as it should be you should have no issues....

Setp-daughter's husband is an MOT tester - his words of wisdom are that they check alignment (and that it works) and that's it

That's it

My 99 breezed its MOTs as did the 05 with HID dip and main

My 08 GT has OEM dip and after market mains - its passed on every occasion

This verging on anti-HID hits the BMW Club every now and again and to me, its nothing but scare mongering by people who verge on Luddite attitudes, where they enjoy telling people what they can and can't do - just my view from the bunker
