I have been looking at the contents of several HID kits on ebay and other websites, as well as, the hid-online kit. Most of the ebay kits specify that they contain a ballast and a separate igniter, while the hid-online kit only has a ballast and does not have a separate igniter.

Why do some kits contain separate ballasts and igniters and other kits only have a ballast? Does one configuration have an advantage over the other?

The seperate ignitor kits have a big advantage: The ballast can be mounted anywhere on the bike, with only the small ignitor needing to be placed near the bulb.

The first ones of these were by Phillips, and were "Generation II" units. Now most manufacturers are making seperate unit systems.
