I just got a 2001 k1200lt with 61000 miles on it. When i got it is seemed a little sluggish. I was thinking clogged fuel injectors and/or plugs. So I went and got some new plugs and put fuel injectors cleaner in the tank. I filled the tank and put the fuel injector cleaner in it. Road the bike home and in the morning replaced the sparkplugs, clean the motor and let it dry for about 3 hours. Started the bike and it started to smoke, only at start up for about 15 sec. then it stop and that is that. The smell is something I have never smelled before. Not like oil or anti freeze. Could it be the Fuel injector cleaner cleaning out stuff???? Please help If you can.

Believe it or not, all of these bad boys smoke. If it stops after 15-20 seconds and goes away, you're good.

Next time you stop it. Hold it upright for 30 seconds, then put it on the center stand. I bet it won't smoke... I thought the same thing when I got my 1999. BMW and smoke don't appear to go together. But in this case they do.

Did you have it on the side stand? If so, try shutting the bike off, waiting about 10 seconds for the oil to drain into the sump, then put it on the center stand. Then start it back up later and see if it happens again.

Oil can drain into the cylinders if it is shut off while on the side stand if the rings are lined up.

NORMAL ! That's all you need to know..

The engine is sideways.. So if you just shut it off and plop it on to the sidestand. Some oil will get past things and it'll smoke like a banshee on startup...

Mine smoked for ten or fifteen minutes once... I think it was after a drop...

Don't worry about it...
Shut it off.. Wait 30 seconds then put it on the stand.. You'll be fine...

IF you have mosquitos, Add some DDT to your engine oil..

About 99% of the things you're going to discover are normal.. So when you see or hear something for the first time.. Don't panic...

I see you are in Madison, AL. You will have to come over some time and I'll check out your ride. If you just came from Cruisers and are shifting below 2,500 RPM, yes she will be sluggish. You need to shift at about 3,500 to 5,000 to really enjoy the power band. Once you get comfy with that put her in second gear and do 50 MPH though some twisties for a real fun ride! Oh yeah and first gear is good to 62 MPH (then you will hit the rev limiter).

I recall someone saying something about smoke on the side, boy I got that today,, WOW,,, man I thought it was a goner at first.. then it was clear.. how strange to have a bike puff out a huge ball of smoke then poof its gone.. Keep that pig on the center sand... I ran it off the freeway and stopped and popped it on the side stand for about a hour and when I came out of that diner.. I really thought It was over.... 30 seconds later it was ok.... almost every time its on the side stand it smoke...

If you keep it upright for a few seconds after shutting it off and or even lean it to the right a little bit the oil drains off quickly and you won't have that smoke. The only time mine is on the center stand is for some sort of service or adding air to the tires.

When I'm out and about. I shut mine off while it's upright. Then I tilt it slightly to the right for about 10-15 seconds. then put it on the side stand. When I'm at home. Same thing but use the center stand instead. It hardly ever smokes now.

BMW put the engine in the wrong way so it leans and let's oil run to the rings on the side stand.

Side benefit, you will never have any real ring wear as they are always getting bathed in oil.

the very first K prototypes had the motor with the cylinder head on the right side but for some reason it was not acceptable

Any horizontal engine with a head on the left side of the bike will do the same thing when the conditions are right. You want to see some real smoke, go watch an old Stearman biplane radial engine start up.
