I just bought my first LT, a 2003 w/37k miles on it, 3 weeks ago. It has some cosmetic damage; so after checking over all the mechanicals, I have stripped it down to paint it a custom color. I mean it is totally apart, rivets, wires, hinges and all. Every painted plastic is just plastic now.

Here is my question ... what should I do while it is all apart? What are your suggestions for upgrades, improvements, tricks, gadgets, etc. while the bike is in this state? Give me your best thoughts on how to improve or trick out an already great bike.

How much $$$$ do you have to spend, what kind of riding are you going to do, one up or two, what maintenance has been done, what does the bike have for music, & communication, & gps, other ???

you did good getting it apart, can you put it together ??

I have some extra cash, but not a ton. It will be a mix of riding, as I will use it as often as possible to get around town as well as take the wife out for some longer pleasure rides(she enjoys riding as well). All the regular maintenance has been done according to the original owner and dealership he went to. The bike has the single cd as well as the 6 disc changer. No gps, but does have an aftermarket comm system.

I was extremely meticulous and took pictures, so I think I will be able to get it back together without too much problem.

You should have a Clymers manual for sure and a set of the Paul Sayegh maintenance DVD's will help you get it back together correctly.

Definitely upgrade the headlights to HID. If you are a flasher i.e. you use high beams to gain the attention of cagers around you then upgrade only the low beam, else upgrade both high and low beams. http://www.ddmtuning.com has great prices and a lot of us are using their product with good success. Some have had issues but most have not.

With all the tupperware off you might want to replace the air and fuel filters so that you will know that they have a.) been changed and b.) been changed correctly.

Same with checking the valve clearance. Once you have the tupperware off, why not? You can re-use the valve cover gasket so the only disposable you will need is a little RTV for the corners.

Aw heck, change the oil & filter, gear box oil and final drive oil. Then you will know for sure on these items also.

DO NOT POST A THREAD ASKING WHICH BRANDS OF OIL OR FILTERS TO USE!!!! You will just cause a riot or something close to it. Put these types of questions in the category of 'Never try to teach a pig to sing. It will frustrate you and annoy the pig'. Search the forum for answers to these questions.

If she's running good I would wait 'till after dark and ride her like the dickens. A totally nekkid LT would be kind of fun to ride as long as the temps aren't too low. You can cable tie the turn indicator lights in place to keep you legal. If the headlight is out then probably best to just sit on her and dream.

By all means, check to see if the slave cylinder drain hole has been drilled, if not , DO IT! Many posts here over the years, many with pictures. It can save your clutch (A big expensive job) when your clutch slave cylinder fails, which it likely will sooner or later.

Hey Pastor you might think about when your drilling the weep hole for the clutch slave that you think about a hole in the bottom of your clutch housing...a early warning system for your main seal and O ring. Some here may not agree that it is needed--I added it to my bike only because I was almost at 60,000 miles on the clock. Definitely, do the clutch slave weep hole though... Let us see some pics of your ride when she is all a blush with her new paint.:thumb:

:wave In addition, if you are changing your air and fuel filter, then look into replacing the plastic fuel quick disconnects with the metal ones. A few people have had theirs' fail, so it would fall under the catagory of preventative maintainence, as would drilling the weep holes. Also change the coolant, brake fluid and clutch fluid and you'll be up to date maintainence wise. Have fun Pastor! ;) Take some pics and lets us marvel at your ride.... :dance:

On my '03 the balls on the shifter linkage needed checked. One was loose, and that'll cause breakage. I check and lube mine at every oil change and at 90,600 miles is still shifting smooth with no breakage. You can do it with or without the skin on.

Gotta see your machine with the custom paint when your finished. PICS Please!

Many good suggestions already for you above. You're gonna love her more by the time you've got her done and riding again.
