Yes, had one on a 2003 K1200GT. Great idea, however after some time, the weight of the lock (and movement by wind & vibration), caused the license plate holder & mud guard to crack. I remember going to my dealer and getting a replacement mud guard and the parts salesman said " I have seen that before with those locks". I have an newer RT now and I don't see a difference in the mud guard setup.

An accessory cable with the under-seat helmet loop works well. Cable gun locks are convenient and let you leave the helmets upright in case of rain. I ride in all weather and hanging helmets near the grimy rear fender wouldn't be my first choice.

I have a ZTechnik helmet lock on my "11 RT, moved from my 800ST. Works very well, and being mounted that low, and under the topcase, my helmet is almost completely protected from rain. Highly recommend that mount.

I just picked up a 4 ft combination cable lock at Ace Hardware for under $6. This will fit in the glove box and will work well to lock the helmet and jacket. Thanks for the idea

Has anyone tried to mount a ZTechnik helmet lock on their RT? Had something similar on an earlier bike and really enjoyed it. I don't like the idea of having to remove the seat to get to lock the helmet.

I use it on my '09 and love it. Very convenient for day-to-day security of the helmet.

Drawbacks I've found:

--It lets the helmet sit bucket-side up so on rainy days you get a wet helmet.
--It adds an additional key to your keyring. Disc lock, helmet lock, ignition/pannier - I'm up to three now.

I've never heard of any problems with cracking mudguards.

I like the ideas of a cable lock. I usually lock the helmet, drape the jacket over the windshield, roll the pants onto the seat and then put the cover over everything, but adding the cable lock to my arsenal will speed things up.

I have an 8' cable and lock I use for our gear and helmets (wife's helmet, jacket, and pants and my helmet, jacket, and pants), all laid across the seats. Kind of a mass of stuff, but it just may make the "grab and run" a-hole move along to an easier target.

I used to use a cable lock for my skis locking them to a ski rack. The brand was "Krytonite"; I thought "great" it will be bulletproof.

When I had it locking my skis once, the unit would not release with the unlock code entered. I checked all over the ski area to find someone with a pair of bolt cutters to free up my skis.

No luck, so I borrowed a pair of regular paper scissors and they cut the cable with almost no effort.

Bottom line is: don't trust a cable lock.

I went down to Lowes and bought a 4 foot length of small loop chain and a padlock. I run the chain thru the sleeves of my jacket, thru my full face helmet and through the passenger grab handles on the bike. Works fine and is small enough to fit in the palm of my hand.

I think the purpose of most if not all of these locks is to stop the almost always honest person from the temptation of taking the item. Even the semipro or teenage crook will still take what they want.

Btw, I like the cable idea since my helmet has no D rings.

I got this, hangs off the passenger hand rail when in use and in the glove box when not.

Cheap and easy to use.
I like this. As you say, looks really easy to use.
As for the Ztechnik lock, I agree with the comment about hanging a helmet or two behind a grimy/muddy tire. Also, I don't consider this secure at all. the only thing between a thief and a helmet or two costing from a couple hundred dollars each to 700 or 800 dollars each is some simple tools to undo this bracket from behind the license plate. Depending on the fasteners used, a person could have this off w/ a cordless screwdriver in under a minute.

No Way Jose! :(
