Congratulations on your owning an LT !
I am a new owner as well and there is a great deal to learn.
bmwlt.com is the best place I have found to do that by far.

Welcome to the asylum!

So... what kind of oil do YOU think is best, and how often do you change oil and filters? What brand? What is your favorite tire?

Just kidding... those questions seem to flare all sorts of emotions around here. Fortunately the site's search function works well and should yield many entertaining hours of reading. :D

Anything you hear from "the deputy" must be confirmed by two or more witness, hehe.

HERE YOU GO........

Welcome! Enjoy the big girl! This site has an unbelievable amount of information to make owning the K12 an absolute pleasure. Here is a post by JSpen that sums up lots of great info...

When coming to a stop.. Leave the engine running and in first gear always...

Turn off the engine by putting the side stand down... Hold the bike upright for 20-30 seconds to let the oil drain out from the back side of the cylinders..

Then put it on the side or center stand....

One of these days you'll forget and get a 5 minute smoke trail... It's normal...

Don't come to a stop with the front end turned EVER...Because of the telelever front end.. Any energy that would have been used up by bobbing the front end on a conventional bike will cause the bike to want to jump towards the ground....

If she starts over. Once it get's past the point of no return... You're not going to stop it...
Don't try.. You'll only get hurt... She has bumpers and as long as you don't hit the windshield on something like a wall or another car or bike.. . She'll survive..

The engines are kind of noisy and the alternator drive can make some noise if you've got a big load on the electrical system....

42psi front, 48psi Rear...Religiously unless you like to buy tires..
The tires will start cupping and you'll start hearing a roar when you lean the bike...NORMAL....
Finally the roar will get so bad that you'll have to buy new tires to make it go away..NORMAL...

It really concerns me that you don't have a license.. An LT is NOT a good first bike...Hopefully you'll survive long enough to learn to ride it...

Oh yeah, You've got an LT now.. NOTHING will EVER be CHEAP again...

Everything you buy for her will be twice as much as you thought it would be.. At least..

Don't cheap out on anything... It never pays on this bike..

Have fun...

Welcome to the forum Michael. After reviewing the list of your previous rides I think I can safely say welcome to adult motorcycling - that's not to say that forum members are adult, exactly. I know you are going to love your LT and that your participation here will be both fun and helpful. It's certainly been that and more for me.

Congrats on your new ride. I too have an '01 and love it. You don't need a sidecar do you? (Check out the classified ads.).

Our year can be a little tricky when we ask for help on the forum with certain issues. On production date January 1, 2001 BMW changed the braking system from ABS II to the newer style linked system where application of either the front or rear brake is linked to the other. The newer style is also a powered brake system like in your car.

The easy way to tell is to look at the brake calipers. If BREMBO is on the casting then you have the older ABS II. If BMW is cast into the calipers then you have the newer linked system.

It makes a huge difference and I consider myself very fortunate to have the older ABS II type brakes.

Again, Congrats on your new ride.

Welcome aboard Michael! I see you have met some of the inmates and of course, we are inmates here by our own choosing. I cannot add much more to some of their advice...but I would just mention the Hall of Wisdom if you havent found it yet. Just go up to the technical banner at the top and you can access it...a wealth of info on your beemopotamus. We all love the girl and there is some great folks on here with years and years of experience. Happy and safe riding...

P.S. Should warn you about a sudden ailment that strikes most of us here...it's an insane desire to add farkles to your ride...it will cost you dollars and wreak havoc on your budget.

Nonsense! The 10 amp fuse that fixed my Low-beam HID headlight was free (it was already in my toolbox.)

Now...explain to your wife the dealership charges when, in the first week, you have to tow it back to the dealership because it's burping oil out the FD.

(Someone had used a pressure washer to clean the bike. Water got in the diff and made vinagrette.)
