I checked the "Technical" Section and couldn't find my answer. Has anyone removed the pillion back rest, AND the electrical connector? The back rest is simple. Does one have to remove the inside shell of the top case to gain access to the electrical connection? Any advice on this will be most appreciated.

Will, yu have to remove the left side rear speaker assemby. For doing that you need to remove the small torx screws from the inside of your trunk lid. When removing the screws pay close attention to the lengths of them as they vary. Put them back as you removed.
Behind the speaker panel you will find the backrest heater connector.

Thanks for your reply and input. After I posted my message, I went back out, looked a little closer, and discovered the removal process, just as you described.

Thanks,

Something else that is REALLY important...

For some crazy reason BMW put an aggressive thread locker on the 4 bolts that hold the back rest in place. If you're lucky enough to get them out without twisting the "clamp nuts" in their plastic mounting holes and ruining them you WILL need to pay special attention when re-installing them.

I recommend chasing the nut threads with a metric tap ($4.00) and get every bit of thread lock out of there. Clean the bolt heads with a wire brush and acetone to get them clean as well.

If you don't you will likely cause the old thread lock to jam in the nuts when you replace them, causing the nuts to spin... Not good. Be very gentle when tightening, barely snug is more than adequate to hold it in place!

been there done that!

I did not realize this was a common problem. I ruined one of my nuts in the plastic and had to fix it with some epoxy glue.
I just thought I had it crooked on the threads or something...

Good remark Ron!
