I'm importing a RHD bike into a LHD country, and i've been told that i have to change my headlight to get a certificate of conformity (and hence registration).

510 euros, fitted !!!! (that's £450 / $700 very very approx)

So, anyone know if the headlight (2003 model, so one unit) can be adjusted ? Is it the angle of the lamp, or the angle of the light casing, or maybe just the fitting position that changes?

I'd appreciate any advice !

It's angle of light in the casement. The only way to change it is to purchase the LHD country specific headlight casement. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

I would check with members from LHD countries for a slavager yard, to get a used unit.

It's the angle of the reflector. Left side directs light to the right, and right side directs light to the left. The booklet sez: ... shade off a section of the headlight lens (cut adhesive tape to size and stick on). If going from RHD to LHD traffic, tape off ~about 1/4th of the lens width by placing the tape, top to bottom, at the far left side of the lens.

Overhead playlike view of the lens fixture reflector:

Left side reflects to the right \__i__/right side reflects to the left.

Not sure if this action will satisfy the "conformity" police, where the bike is going to be located. Sounds like they want you to replace the fixture instead!

I've been through some of this, when I took a temporary assignment in the UK (from the US). At that time, I was considering shipping mt LT over to the UK, but decided that it was simply too much hassle (and expense) to deal with for the relatively short time that I was going to be over there. So, I left the LT here (in storage) and bought a RT in the UK.

Anyway, I was told that those stickers (that basically mask the headlight beam) are not be sufficient for the certificate of conformity. While they may be OK when you travel for brief periods on the mainland (Europe), they don't cut the mustard to get the UK certificate of conformity. This is what I was told (by the local BMW shop in Oxford) and I didn't look into it any further.

Not sure where you're located (as your location is filled out), but as the others have said, look for a local breaker to see if you can get a used part. If you're in the UK, you can also call the folks at http://www.motorworks.co.uk ...they break alot of BMW's, so they might have a headlight for you. You might also call some local BMW dealers. Sometimes they receive wrecked bikes, and might be willing to sell you the headlight.

Thanks for all the advice. I presumed that there wasn't much i could do apart from buy a new headlamp unit. I've tried all the breakers, but nothing going.

I'll soon have a second RHD headlamp for sale, if anyone needs one!

Somebody who imported a British LT into Spain asked the same question not long ago in the Spain LT site.

The generalised opinion was that the testing authorities, who are pretty strict, are only worried about the height of the beam and not the angle.

He has not taken the bike to be tested yet, so I don´t know if this theory is fact.

Something to be thought about is that in Japan they also drive on the left. I suppose all exported bikes have different headlights.
