For those BaseCamp users. If I have BaseCamp open on my computer and plug in my Nuvi 2595, BaseCamp does not see it. My computer sees it ok. If I close and reopen BaseCamp, my Nuvi is showing. Is this normal? I am running a new computer with Windows 8. When I plug in my Nuvi, Garmin Express opens automatically as it should.

I would say that Basecamp should show your Nuvi when you plug in. I would suspect that WIN8 might have a driver problem or Garmin Express is not allowing Basecamp to see the Nuvi. Try disabling Garmin Express to not start when you plug in your Nuvi & see if that helps.

PS. I am running Basecamp 4.2.2 with a Montana, I don't use Express as the Montana doesn't like it .

I have occasionally seen some weirdness where it would take BC a loooong time to see my Zumo (660/Nav IV). I have never been able to pin the behavior down well enough to characterize it very well. I had never seen it before moving to Windows 8. I have seen it happen a few times on two different computers. The first time I saw it was bringing up a new laptop (Windows 8). I have seen it reappear after map updates.

Try plugging it in with BC running and then just go on about your business for a while, then check it later (like .5 hour) and see if it is showing up.

If it is the same thing that I have seen, BC will eventually see it. And then once it does, the problem seems to go away. There is clearly some sort of initial cacheing or perhaps a timeout condition that is happening...as I said, my issue is so bizarre that I have never been able to get my arms around it. While all this is happening, the device shows up just fine in the Windows Explorer, so I don't think it is a driver issue, unless a very subtle one.

This may or may not be related to what you're seeing. Different Zumos, and I could not make it immediately see the device by restarting BC as you can. But give that a shot and see what happens.

I received the following reply from Garmin:

If Basecamp is working properly it should refresh on its own. Is your computer recognizing the unit when you connect it to the computer immediately? I would recommend uninstall and reinstalling Basecamp if the computer is recognizing the unit right away. If not you might try making sure the unit is in mass storage mode when you connect it to the computer by following the steps below.

To put an MTP device into mass storage mode:

1. Touch Volume on the main menu
2. Touch and hold the upper right corner of the screen
3. Touch MTP Settings (you may need to scroll down)
4. Touch Mass Storage Single Session
5. Touch Save

What I did was put my Nuvi in "Mass Storage" mode instead of the "Mass Storage Single Session" mode as that reverted back to its original setting. Basecamp finally sees my Nuvi while it is open.
