Ok, long story short, I replaced my rubber grips with pro grips, I have heated grips, so I did everything correctly. Now when I rest my hand on the grip, the ends of the grips flex downward. Due to no bar inside, I'm guessing bmw has shorts grips, so my question is, can I buy some $20 bar ends, cut the ends of my new grips off and put bar ends in on my bike? Just to gain grip length? Keep in mind that I do have heated grips.

Off the top of my head, I don't see why not. I used open-end grips on my '99, with bar-ends to fill in the hole. The main problem was the rubber insert on the left hand bar did not go in right and required some fiddling with pacers, etc. to get it right.

Pro grips are available in two different lengths. You may want o try shorter ones if you don't feel like fiddling with bar ends...

Good info. I was worried about the wire in the bar from my grip heaters. Would those e the 73mm long grips I hear about?

Progrip 719's (what I used) are 120mm long.

Well, I just found my problem... I put on 140mm grips. that explains the extra at the ends. The only problem now is that 7/8" won't fit on mine... I had to use 1" grips

Well I just ordered the Pro Grip 719's... black on black... they should be here tomorrow... If they don't fit, I'm billing you. hahaha. just kidding

It does take some patience and lubrication. Some folks suggest hair spray, claiming it helps lubricate and slide the grips on and then dries and serves as grip glue.

Personally, I have always used a spray cleaner such as Windex or 409. It does the ob and I don't seem to have too much of a problem with he grips sliding afterwards.

A trick that does seem to help is to put your hand on the open end of the grip, sealing the hole as you press inwards. Air pressure helps to bell out the rubber and lets the grip slide on easier.

You're off of the hook! I picked up my 719 grips, closed ends, brought them home and fought. Then I remembered someone told me to mist some WD40 into the grips, and slide them on quickly, the turn the grip heater on to warm away the lube. That did it! Some good fitting grips! Thanks! :dance:

I went out this morning and twisted on both grips, and they didn't budge... So I'm a happy camper.

OK. I'm going to step in here and note that, while the PG 719 (or the 721 or the 724, for that matter) are all very nice and comfortable, the fact is, for me, they're actually sport-bike grips more suited for 'grab' than 'squoosh.' What I've used, with great success and comfort on my 'Wing and my Cavalcade are the Deluxe Tour grips from Grab-On. (Photo below). These grips are the bomb, and comfortable after long riding days.

My question, though, is that I've not been able to find a definitive answer to the question of what diameter grips actually fit the LT. There are even some posts that opine that either a 7/8" or a 1" is correct. So, since the Grab-Ons come in the following permutations:

7/8" X 6"
7/8" X 6 1/4"
1" X 6"

Which one am I looking at....especially since I'm too cheap to make a $25 mistake. Thanks!

Those do look quite nice. I used 1" diameter easily WITH SCOTT GRIP GLUE. I used 7/8" on a full rubber grip (719's) and had to use WD40 to slip them on... they are so tight now, that they don't need any glue.

The key to this is that you're restricted on LENGTH... at least on mine... I had the PROGRIP cruiser grips that were 140mm long... They were too long... I had to cut them off (3 days after spending $20 on them) and put the 125mm long 719's on. If you go with 6" long grips, you'll have about 1.25" TOO MUCH of grip hanging out there with NO bar inside... drove me crazy enough to change mine.

125mm = about 4.71 - 4.75 inches.
when I had the grips off (bare bars) I measured and I had about 4.75" worth of real estate to cover.

If your bars are the same as mine then you won't be able to use the ones that you want, without some flexing of extra grip at the end.

Don't mind the slight flex and, because of their construction it's not really a problem, since they're inherently stiff, anyway. Also, if this bike is like my others, isn't there some room to move the controls slightly further up on the bars?

Mine have no room to move, the plastic covers that cover the metal bars are tight against the controls. if you cut them down maybe you can move them, but I don't know how they mount (if they screw into a bracket on the bars or just clamp onto the bars.) But if you don't mind the extra then you can fit some grips on there... just cut the old ones off (Carefully due to the heating elements if you have them) and measure the diameter of your grips.

I just re-wrap mine about every two years with thick tennis handle wrap. I just bought a pair today at Dicks Sporting Goods for $11.

Haaa. I do the same thing. Tennis grip tape. It works.. :D
