I just checked the price on Amazon for the GS-911 and it was 279.00 down from 400.oo these past years. I was planing to support a BMW Rider supplier like Ted's but this price is very good. If any one has been holding out to get one this might be a good time even with Christmas just around the corner. I hope the other fourms hear about it.:wave:yeah:

Is a GS911 necessary for pre-2017 models? I don’t see one listed.
That depends on what or how your going to use it. I have a 2012 RT. Great tool. I'm sure they have one to buy. If not go directly to their web site. You want the yellow one called GS911 blue or usb model.

I've been using the Wi-Fi version (Red) with my 07 since it came out.
Although I never use the Wi-Fi. I always connect to my Surface Pro tablet with the USB cable.

YMMV

So do I while I was using a borrowed older version (round plug), but now that I bought my own wifi version, the wifi part comes very handy when I just quickly want to check on errors and reset them, such as was the case with a 10111 sidestand error getting logged. For everything else USB is the way to go.

Is it necessary? The short answer is No.
As others have said the yellow usb model is what you want for a '13 RT. However, it has been discontinued. If you can find an unsold one or a used one, you're good to go for as long as you don't upgrade to a recent model bmw.
The wifi model with the round connector will do also but is more expensive. You should see some used ones available on ebay. The ones with the ODBII connectors will also work but you will need an adaptor.

There is now a 2nd generation usb model with it's own limitations.
Also remember that the personal use gs911 are limited to 10 VIN licenses. Only the wifi versions are upgradable to an unlimited VIN license.

"SALE" ended prematurely last week.

Today (12/9/2019) was advertised as the past day of the promotion.

From the Beemer Shop
Hello Paul,

Yes, I’m sorry to report that we ran out of the stock that we were able to purchase at the lower cost which we were giving to the customer in the form of the discounted price. I was also not able to purchase any more inventory from Hex at that lower price as they ended the sale.

I’m sorry to give you this news, I would love to be able to provide the discount but I simply can’t get them anymore at the discounted price.

I am having an end of year phone meeting with the powers at Hex. I will ask them to consider another discount for next year, maybe an Easter sale or Memorial Day sale, something like that. We will announce these sales if and when they happen on our Facebook page and also through our newsletter which you can sign up for at the bottom of our home page.

Best regards,

As the proud owner of a new to me 18 RT, I'm still in the stage of got to have all that is RT....in other words the money is burning a hole in my pocket.

So, was on ebay and I noticed that there are essentially 2 versions/types of the gs-911 tool. One is red and probably not made in China and cost $400, the other is yellow and more than likely made in China and cost $75-&125. They both claim to do the same thing.

In trying to get more info came across a link over on MOA board where the guy gives a tutorial and he uses the yellow version but I don't know what year RT. So my question will the yellow one work with my '18RT?

Thanks

Not sure how you ascertain the country of origin from the case color but if it's on E-Bay and less expensive than a local authorized dealer, you are most likely throwing your money away. These things are tricky and, though I do buy stuff on Ebay (most recently a set of engine guards), I would NEVER buy something electronic. Especially anything claiming to be the real deal at half price.

Look, if you want access to the Canbus but don't want to pay out the nose, google "Motoscan." They made a app that can be used with any commercially available, bluetooth-enabled, OBD reader that you can get from Amazon for about $20. The app is ike $50-$75 (don't quote me on that, google it) and it's used by a lot of folks on here and other forums so it's a known quantity. I have the EZCan but had I known about Motoscan before I bought the Hex unit I would have gotten that.

Instead of bashing on E-Bay and China, or trying to sell you on the virtues of the Motoscan offering let me answer your question directly.

No, the yellow version will not work on your '18 RT.

Why?

Because BMW changed the data transmission protocol. The older yellow versions supported the CANBUS protocol only, and the newer red versions support support BMW's newer combination of both CANBUS and LINBUS data protocols. That's the real reason. There are other options that Hexcode can provide for their red versions that include a new OBDC connector that BMW also changed, but those can be added to original red versions for a fair price. The red version are BACKWARDS compatible to work on older BMW's but not the other way around. The yellow versions simply don't have the ability to talk in both data protocols and are NOT something Hexcode did to "cheat" it's older established customers. As a matter of fact, there is a current reduced price upgrade for those who wish to turn in their older yellow GS-911s for the latest red units.

Hoped this helped answer your original question.

Yeah, that yellow one is a fake. FWIW, I have both the 911 (got it in a trade), and the MotoScan app + the UniCarScan adapter they recommended. I use the 911 for routine maintence and the MS app for when I am on the road since I don't have to bring a laptop with me to use it (the 911 only "reads" some data through its phone apps; if you want to do anything, you'll need it connected to a computer).

If going the MotoScan way, only use the recommended adapters they list. If you don't, you'll be in here asking why the $10 one you bought off of ebay or amazon didn't work.
