If you had to ride hundreds of miles on unpaved or gravel/hardpack, maybe mud roads, which bike would you take.

A great little bike also. Had one for a weekend while my 1200 was in for service. Just don't get in a big hurry. IMHO....

My decision would be based on how many paved miles will be thrown in there with the mud and crud. If you're talking JUST gravel mud etc, I'd go lighter weight. If you're going to be doing a mix, then maybe something heavier - more road worthy.
I too have a DR650 and love it for it's off road capability. Were I to want a mix, I'd be looking strongly at the V-strom. Only road one once, but was very impressed. Not an aggressive off roader but more than adequate on the dirt and gravel, and very well mannered on the highway.

KLR 650. I'd get a used one and sell it when the trip was over (unless I'd planned on more of the same). Second choice would be a Wee-Strom.

I am currently working on a deal on one local. Great bike for the trails but a bit heavy for the real off road stuff. Also checking out the 450 x. That is one light bike.

Another vote for a KLR650 (I prefer the pre-08 version). Great gas mileage, large tank, light, inexpensive, huge aftermarket support for accessories, solid, dependable, it's basically a big dirt bike. I'm biased though, I've got an '07....

Well, if it is just unpaved or gravel/hardpack roads just about any thing you want to ride can handle that. If it is mud, well you might want some TKC80's tires on what you are riding.

That said, it is hard to beat a GS... any GS . I have had a R100GS , R100GSPD, R1100GS, & am now on a 2010 R1200GSA.

I road a '63 R60 with a R60/6 drive train up the Alcan to Alaska in '87. It was maybe 2/3 paved & 1/3 not. If a /2 with street tires on it can do that, you can ride unpaved or gravel/hardpack, maybe mud roads on just about anything.

Based on your question and the reference to Northern Labrador, are you considering the Trans-Lab Highway? If so, you might want to reconsider the Can Am. Your fuel capacity and consumption (miles per gallon) might make it risky getting from Churchill Falls to Goose Bay - there are no services along the way. (This is based on my crossing in 2004.)

I would also consider a tall windscreen. 18 wheelers traverse this highway at about 50-60 mph (85-100 kph) and it isn't unusual for a piece of gravel the size of a golf ball to come flying out of a dust cloud aiming right for your head.
