Ok so I went and saw a 2009 LT today about 15 min from the house.

The guys lives in a REAL nice house on a lake about 10 min from downtown. (he has an f'ing float plane on the lake)

His garage is carpeted (so is mine), but his is immaculate and has a new Harley and a huge Cadillac SUV and is clean enough to sleep on the floor.

So I the bike looks like new.

2 problems.

1. NO test drive. He was so nervous about the bike he would not even let me take it off the center stand. He also was so nervous as I swung my leg over to sit on the bike while it was on the center stand that he grabbed my boot and helped me on and off.

Sort of weird right?

2. The bike does not have the rear preload. He says it was replaced on day one at the dealer with lowered shock. In fact as I was sitting on the bike (while on the center stand) I was almost flat footed. I could not do that on my other 2009 for sure. So the center stand must have been lowered some how also.

The bike is in perfect condition. I went over the darn thing with a fine tooth comb and it seems GREAT

So I believe that if I get my cash tonight for my GSA I am going to get this one.

But I do not believe that he is going to let me test ride till he has cash in hand.

Oh and I am going to get the extended warranty $1760 for three years unlimited miles.

I wouldn't need to ride it, but you might have the BMW dealer run the VIN and be 100% certain it has not been in an accident. Re: grabbing your boot, the seller was just making sure your boot did not scratch the bike. If it had scratched his perfect bike, would you have replaced the seat with a new one? Not likely. He's an anal perfectionist. Pitty him, but enjoy a bike that's just like new.

You will probably have to change out the rear shock.

FWIW, I do not allow test rides when selling a bike. What I WILL do is complete bill of sale and have (buyers) cash in (MY) hand. If he takes it for a ride and does not like it, I tear up the bill of sale and return the cash, PROVIDED no damage done to the bike. I tell the buyer this up front when he asks about a test drive. I have yet to have any serious buyer balk at this, and it keeps the joyriders from messing up my stuff.

I also ride along with him on one of my other bikes, just to be certain nothing has transpired...

Paul it sounds good if the price is right. Sounds like a clean bike.

Sounds like a new machine with lots of miles still on the original tires. I'll bet all of the services are up to date by year since there are so few miles on the bike.

I bought a 2009 with 12,800 miles in perfect condition - flew out to Boise handed the check
over - never test rode it and drove home 2,000 miles.

My seller however was a extremely courteous - well spoken - not nervous and just a joy to
deal with. Sorry your seller appears to be sort of anal . . .

However I would not let that get in the way of a great deal - so often in life I have had to deal
with situations that are not all that pleasant to get what I was looking for. As others have
said run the VIN and throw the dice.

Sounds like a great find. However, I do think 1700.00+ is a little steep for the extended warranty. My dealer wrote up my extended warranty on an 09 that I bought and shipped out to California for 1200.00 for three years unlimited miles...

Sounds like a great bike, but as Ronald Regan said: "trust but verify". ;)

1. Verify clean VIN before you go there again.

2. Check all WRITTEN service records. If he doesn't have them the price goes much lower, really fast. Since he's a pilot odds are he has them type written and double spaced. Don't ask me how I know. :D

3. Test ride? Heck yeah. Fork over the bank cashiers check with a written sales agreement, title transfer, etc. for a 30 minute test ride with stipulations. Make sure you have full coverage insurance in place - either his or yours.

You no likey - you get your money back - simple! If things get weird (and they sometimes do) you CAN have the cashier's check voided.

If you're happy just ride off into the sunset. :bike:

Win - win. :thumb:

The $1200 price is for an LT still under the factory warranty.

$1760 is the 3 yr out of warranty price.

Best to find out exactly what that warranty will and won't cover....

Sounds like a great bike though.. I say go for it...

I'd bet you'll find a dozen guys ready to trade out the shock and stand in a heartbeat if it's too low for you... Reduced ground clearance it what you have to watch out for. LT's don't have much clearance in the first place... Then if you lower it.....

Good Luck

Thanks for all the feedback

I think that one thing that I missed the most about not having and LT was the gang here :)

SO he ended the aution and I head to the bank in the morning to meet him to get the title and drive the bike home.

So I guess by lunch time tomorrow I am back in the club!

Paul, sounds like a good deal. I wouldn't worry too much about a test ride. I do zactly like Tony does when I sell a bike. Tire kickers are a PIA. Got money and bill of sale, then you can ride. If the owner is anal, then everything on the bike is prolly good. I also agree with all the advice others have posted about checking the VIN etc, but it sounds like you found a gem. Best wishes :bmw:

Welcome home!

The DMV where I live is a wonderfull place. The folks there are nice and I swear I spent more time flirting with the cute government worker mom than I did actually processing the paperwork. In fact when I showed up I was next in line.

No waiting.
