Appears it should be a clean bike, 12k miles owned by what seems to be a knowledgable owner.
I've read pretty extensively on this forum about these bikes. I'm not too worried about the final drive or maintenance costs. More than anything I'm a bit worried about the power brakes and possible failure of what appears to be an extremely expensive part.
It seems to be a relatively rare failure, is my perception correct?
If it does fail, are we still in the situation where replacement is the only option or is there a possibility of a rebuild?
Otherwise they sound like pretty decent machines and quite a bit of bike for the dollar.
For me it would be one of six bikes and probably would not get huge mileage piled on it, mainly a long day here and there and an annual trip.

Just completed a 16,500km ride on my '05... engine never missed a beat, no issues with brakes, just wore out a couple of rear tyres (towing) and the clutch seems to be fine.
It's got just over 80,000kms on it now... I think it'll keep going for a long time yet !

Seems awful low mileage for a 7 year old bike. Which by the way should have had 7 annual brake flushes performed. If not then you are justified to be leery of the ABS unit. Over all model years with integral brakes there have been ABS failures but not near as many as rear drives. No real viable rebuild available yet.

Not sure how much you know about the '05. Excuse me if I state the obvious. I've owned an '05 since '07. Love the bike... love the suspension. They've got a high centre of gravity so they can be a challenge to ride at slow speeds. The stock seat is horrible. Probably the worst year for seats. Very narrow. Apparently potential buyers couldn't reach the floor in the showroom so their answer was to narrow it. I bought a Russell Day Long and love it. The rear end was beefed up in '05 which needed to happen. And it's got about 20 or so more horsies in '05. Tires are expensive and there's only 2 choices that I'm aware of. Can't wait to try out the new K1600GTL.... :)

Bought an 05 in 09 with 7K on it. I never stop worrying about ABS and FD failures @ $3000.00 each. Put 400 miles on it today doing 80 AND 90 MPH in 35-40 MPH crosswinds and the thing never missed a beat.

Pic is of my buddy along the Kern River today.

From what I've read, even if the ABS system fails ( dashboard lights start to flash ) your brakes continue to work correctly, except that they are not ABS.

The fix is either black tape or a new ABS unit. Occasionally my 02 lights flickered and that just meant that one of my brake fluid tanks was a tad low.

MY only hesitation on an 05 would be the power center stand, but that is just me. Here where it is flat, I find the extra weight, hydraulics and electronic unnecessary. Another reason for me to love the K1600GTL, but that's another thread.

As long as you're just poking along that slowly ;) you can stop worrying about your ABS and FD. I just keep riding my '05 and enjoying the ride. If it breaks, so be it. So far, fluids and tires are all that it's needed. Alarm receiver did go under warranty but I never use that anymore so no worries.

So when these power brake units fail what is it about them that causes the failure?
I had imagined something electrical but is there something else like corrosion?
I don't understand the relationship to the yearly flushes with preventing failure.

The killer failure is the abs unit. They are pricey! On the LT's manufactured after January 1, 2001 if the abs unit does fail your brakes would feel like the power brakes in your car if the engine died. Prior to this mfg date there was no power assist so you only lose the abs function.

I would buy the thing and ride the bejeebers out of it. They are amazing rides.
There are folks on this forum who can rebuild your final drive correctly for a few hundred dollars.
