The table below provides the GPI rankings for the 140 countries analysed in 2008 and the 121 countries analysed in 2007, as well as year-on-year comparison. Countries most at peace are ranked first. A lower score indicates a more peaceful country. You can click on a country to see the detail of its peace indicators and drivers.

Damn 3rd place!!!!!! What a shame on behalf of my country! ;)

Pål,
Since you have fished this ocean to near extinction, why don't you pack up your political circus side-show act and move it lock, stock and barrel, over to http://www.i-bmw.com .
The forum JoMomma was custom made just for you. Caution these folks are take no prisioners, in your face, carinivore BMW riders (but not LTs. You will need to stay here for you LT fix!).

I cannot say I disagree with the rankings in general. The US has really become a violent country, though some (not me) would argue we're violent for good reasons.

But I wonder what government acts are deemed violent and how they're weighted. Clearly, warring is violent, and oppression of free speech is violent, but so is taxation, or any law that forces people to act, or not act, in a way they would not do so otherwise. When it comes to being violent, the more laws a country has "on its books", the more wealth is forcibly taken from some people and given to others, the higher the violence.

Many "passivists" believe wholeheartedly in the welfare state, ignoring the violence required to impose it. It'd be nice if all such factors were included in these rankings. Taxes are pretty high in the US (we just pay for military activities all over the world rather than government medicine), so I don't think it would really help the US ranking, but it would probably knock down the more socialized countries when this violence against their population is figured in.

The rankings are skewed because some countries know the U. S. of A. will be there when they need some backing. They know this, so they don't need to invest in their own military, which is one of the measuring points in the index.

Guys.

I am having a couple of real bad weeks here with issues about my health and all. And I will hereby appologize to all of you. And to top it of I will stay away from all other topics but topics regarding the LT and bike riding. (and maybe aviation non political issues))

Sadly I put it on to you and I know most of you are real decent people.

I will also not atend this forum as frequent as I did before, becouse I need to sort out my own thoughts and the stress that I am going thrue with the two surgeries that I am about to take, one witch is very serious and which can have deep side effects or even couse my early retirement from this earth!

Please accept my appologies.

Pål

Taking some time and reflecting back on my own posts I do see a pattern here that I am not proud of but hopefully this will get better in time when i get better in health and I thank you for the leaniancy you have showed me.

Wishing NO ONE ill health. And wishing those experiencing it, some serious and longlasting improvement, with the end result that all the past problems are corrected satisfactorily and permanently. Best to you, Paul. May the surgeries go well and prove to be what is/was needed. Get well - all the way.

Ditto. Get well Paul. I actually enjoy your posts (not to be construed with agree). I don't find your opinions anymore offensive than many others on this board, some who are polar opposites of you (let's see, from Norway, that would be Alaska).

Good luck. Keep us updated.

Pål,

Even so I anticipate your protest, I and many others here will pray for your speedy and full recovery.

And I mean this without any sarcasm: If you should have a medical problem that is unique and treatment is not readily available, Houston has medical facilities that are world leading in many specialties. People come here from all over the world. I have a daughter that lives on the west coast and receives cancer treatment here, I have seen what they can do.

I would gladly help you make a connection here if that could be beneficial.

Good luck, get better soon!

I want to add my prayers for a speed recovery, an my thanks for posting the Peace Index. Food for thought. I do not think any harm as done, nor should any be offended.

I hope you will be back in the saddle soon - bill

I'm disappointed that the USA is only 97th! I was looking forward to a dead-last ranking AS A BADGE OF HONOR!

Best wishes, Pal. May you have a full and speedy recovery. Your posts have been the most entertaining, by far, in the entire site.

Congratulations on your good news! (Some of us would call that answered prayer!!!! Sorry I just couldn't resist, we won't even go there, OK.)

Tomorrow is a holiday here in the USA so to help us celebrate I want you to go for a ride.
