Hello to all the LT community. I just bought a 2009 K1200LT. I got lucky and found it in Black, and a steal on the price. Shame on me for not test riding it longer than I did. When I was out riding it today to get the title switched and plates, I noticed that it would shift from 1st gear to Zero, then next shift was back to 1, then some times to Zero and some times to 4th, and then just fine into 5th. It always shifted but just indicated that it was not. Has anyone seen this? I'm hoping this is a loose connection, as the guy told me he just had it in for its 12,000 mile burp and check. I have seen it go through all the gears correctly, but now it does it more then it doesn't. Any help with this or guidance. I love the bike and all its bells and whistles.

Welcome Strapy!
I am making the assumption that it shifts properly through all the gears 1st through 5th and it is just the indicator that is not displaying correctly. As long as the numbers are displaying properly, I would say it is possibly an issue with the gear position indicator switch or the wiring to it. That is located up and to the left in front of the swing arm on the back side of the transmission. I have not found a good picture of it yet.

Someone else may have experienced this with another solution or cause but that is what comes to mind first.

Depending on how long you've had it try taking it back and see if they'll look at it or fix it. I believe they are required to tell you of any known issues and this probably didn't start all of a sudden, even if they didn't notice the issue. It's worth a shot at least.

Have you tried an obvious fix first? - Disconnect the battery and see if it resets the problem?
I know on other bikes I've had, there was a certain "programming" of sorts to fix the problem that involved riding it through the gears... but I'm not sure on this model.

Easy first... pull the battery cable from the battery and see it that helps.

Did some searching and this is an issue discussed before. Post #4 on the thread below by jzeller tells how to test the switch at the plug with an OHM Meter. Others have trouble when it is wet.

It is not easy to get to but here is where the connector is and what the sender looks like.

AH!!!! I did just wash it after unloading it off the trailer. It sounds like getting wet is the problem. Riding it today, two days post sudsy bath, it is not doing it. I will watch it and note if it happens again and if it was washed or in the rain. Thank you for the help and redirecting to old thread.

Now that you know where it is, you can try and keep the water away from that area and see if it comes back outside of riding in the rain.

My 2000 LT also displays the wrong gear indication. I wish I had asked about the location of the culprit before I performed the weep hole procedure. I missed a perfect opportunity to attempt a repair. I don't want to mess with the drive shaft installation again any time soon.

My 1150RT did the same thing but on the RT it was caused by water getting into the dash unit so you have two possibilities for the intermittent readings. In any case, always avoid using a power washer on any motorcycle. The high pressure forces water past the seals and will damage your wheel bearings, fork tubes, electronics, brakes, etc. If you just can't help yourself, stay away from all the above mentioned areas and any place you see a seal, which really doesn't leave much. If it still does it from just using a hose or riding in the rain, consider fixing the problem as my rider display eventually failed completely. All it would have taken was a little RTV silicone to prevent the failure.

it is possible to rotate the indicator switch without removing anything if, it is out of adjustment and not faulty

Nope. All you can do is change gears really fast. The housing is keyed as well as the shaft. It cannot get out of alignment unless there is an internal failure. Usually it is water from a high pressure car wash that does them in that is why BMW does not recommend washing the bike with one.

Mmmm I thought I turned mine slightly to correct the shift pattern in one of the 3 times I had the gearbox out, thanks John would hate to give someone a bum steer, but it has been known to happen :)

My 2000LT has this problem with not show the correct gear. Would like to know if left the way it is can it cause a bigger problem and leave me stranded if not I'll wait to fix or not. Thanks for everyones' help

If it is just the sending unit on the back of the transmission, the only things I can think of would be reverse not working properly or not starting unless the clutch was pulled in, maybe the cruse control but that is a guess. Will think some more and add if I think of anything else.

You are correct Gordon. If it will light the neutral light all is well in the reverse and start issues. I don't think the cruise even looks at it that I can see from the diagrams. But the neutral signal does pass through the reverser controller on its way to the dash.

Thanks John. The only other thing I could think of is if it isn't registering neutral properly but actually in neutral, if you put the side sand down, it would kill the engine. which is normal operation for in gear and deploying the side stand.
