f I do a Control-Alternate-Delete and look at the items that are running in the background, I see that the Garmin Lifetime Map Update is always on and taking up a significant amount of space.

I tried to turn it off in the programs schedule, but it still runs in the background. I can manually "end the process" in the Task Manager, but isn't there a way to keep it off? I'd rather go in manually when I know there is an update instead of having it run all the time in the background.

Try typing msconfig at the command line and then go to the start up tab. You can uncheck it there and it will not start again until you perform a map update and it may put it back in there. You would be surprised to see what is starting each time your pc turns on.
