I'm not sure if I have a front brake issue or if my observation is normal LT rotor operation. I normally ride with ear plugs and with music from my helmet speakers; however, the other day I was taking a slow helmet-less 15-20 MPH ride around the neighborhood when I heard a rattling noise from the front end on the bumpier sections of pavement. I have never heard the noise at speed or while riding on smooth pavement. No noise was heard during braking.

Other than the rattling noise at slow speed over bumps, the front brakes are operating normally. I believe the source of the noise is from the left and right rotors. The rotor bolts are tight, but I can slightly jiggle both rotors with my hands.

Finally to my question, is it normal for the front rotors to have a slight amount of "play" in them?

John Zeller stated this in another recent post that the front rotors float. Either the rotor has to float on pins back and forth like in most cars or the disk itself has to float. If both were ridged, they would vibrate with very small inconsistencies in the machining or thickness or trueness due to wear and such.

I have 2 front wheels for an LT both pre-02 and both have wave washers under each bolt but it does allow the disk to move back and forth a bit but mine both old and new rotors do not rattle. It actually takes significant force to compress the washer and I can see the washer compress but it is not rigid. In my opinion, something isn't right there as the rotors are not being held tightly enough under the wave washer. I have heard of people using a different set of roll pins " bobbins" as some call them from stock as the EBC do not come with replacements so I wonder if they are actually the right size.

I have not examined a post 02 wheel and rotors closely to see if there is any different in how they rotors feel and are suspended by comparison but I would think they would be comparable even though they are different part numbers. If the roll pins have been replaced, they may not be correctly sized.

yes they will rattle, mine did the wave washers break, if it has not elongated the holes and the bolt is ok you can by new w/washers from any good hardware store and refit them , that's what I did, also they do float similar to the rear

I agree with Dave. I say it is your brake pads that are rattling. If they are not genuine BMW replacement pads, this is most likely your noise. I never had problems with ebc pads, but like you, I ride with a helmet and listen to the radio, so I do not hear the little noises.

The rotors are original with 130,000 miles. I'll have to check the maintenance records to verify the type of brake pads, but I assume they are BMW OEM as the previous owner had the dealer perform all maintenance. During the last front tire replacement, the pads had over 80% of material remaining.

I found the Wave Washer on the Max BMX site (Part # 34 11 2 314 888). Its a cheap purchase, but since the rotors are designed to float, I may not touch anything as the only time I will hear the rattle is during slow parking lot speeds with my music off.

You should be able to visually check the wave washers for any broken ones as Axle mentioned without disassembling. The pads I have use the anti rattle spring up at the pin and I don't have any detectable rattle. If yours don't have the spring, you might think about that on the next set of pads and see if it helps.
