I picked up my new to me Graphite 05 BMW K1200 LT with only 1200 original miles on it with 2+ years of warranty remaining. I rode it home 660 miles in 30 degree weather to eastern WA thru snow, cold, rain, frost, hail and wind from coastal southern Oregon, arrived home last night. I met Scott the owner of Eugene BMW while passing thru, who offered tie down instructions incase I wanted to load it onto a Uhaul trailer or to hold the bike until the snow storm abated and I returned to pick it up @ a later date - but I just waited out the weather for a few hours and headed back out.
It was a very nice gesture on his part - He has a very nice shop.

Initial Observations:
W O W- Does this handle nice, but heavy. (Boeing 747 heavy as in Light Truck as compared to my point & shoot Touring-Sportbike V-Strom) I cranked down the suspension setting 75% and checked tire pressure and away I went thru some curvy roads coming home. Rear brakes squeek some and I wanted to shift up to a 6th gear often as I mostly averaged 75-85 mph according to the BMW Garmin attached to my bike @ 4000 RPM... At that speed my BC said I was only getting 35 mpg but when I slowed down to 65 it was back to 42 mpg and a high of 51.
I keep the R's well above 3500 all the time. I have not owned an inline four in some time now. The engine feels like it has effortless Turbine power. The exhaust thrum sound is very nice. I expected whisper quiet like a goldwing.

In all my years of riding I never hid behind a windshield but the COLD hail stung my face and COLD heavy rain and truck spray on such a long ride sure made having an adjustable windshield worth while !! I thought I would just set it and forget it. I always just look over the shield as a norm.
I frequently adjusted it during this long wet cold ride home!

Having the Heated Grips, Heated Seat, Tall windshield and Gerbing heated Liner made this cold trip possible. I never turned anything off. All items were set on toasty hot!

When it got dark I was very disappointed to find that the handlebar controls were not lighted like the radio controls...

Seating position was not bad, not as good as my V-Strom on a Russell Day long saddle but I imagine in time I will get another
Russell seat and a set of J-Pegs!


The bike came *Loaded with every extra available including the BMW Garmin color GPS. The only thing not included was the adjustable passenger floorboards. It has the tall ws, Comfort seat, 6 CD, Brakelight on rear rack, Convenience package, heated everything, etc.
It was nice finally pulling into my own driveway and seeing the ground effect lighting !! Now all I have to do is figure out my security FOBS and my new Garmin GPS as I am used to using the Magellan Gold GPS!!

I will upload some pictures later – *I gotta go lovingly clean the bike now!!

I am done buying MC’s "now " !! LOL!!!

Boy, it would take a marine to ride throught that type of weather. I used to live in Spokane for a short stint and you can have their winters! Congratulations on your new bike. The "heaviness" turns to "heaveness" the more you ride it, you'll see. The scary part is remembering it weighs 840 lbs.

Pretty impressive riding for this time of year. I am TRYING to avoid the passes for just a little longer, I do not mind the cold but that snow and ice stuff worries me a little. What town do you call home? Welcome to the LT,You will learn to love it even more as time goes by. Looking foward to seeing your pic's

Congrats on the new bike,, I'm glad to hear your satisfied with it... And I agree with you I to am done buying bikes:) Enjoy they truly are fantastic motorcycles..........regards Pete

I too was disappointed with that!
A pretty minor issue though, amongst so many positives.

Hi Brian,

I am in Spokane and had to get home so completing the mission was essential, not a choice. * Well, I guess I could have rented a trailer but there was no adventure in that !!! :^)

C'mon Brian, toughen up. :) I'll be up that way in just over a week, and I'll be looking for riding partners. No excuses. :D

Hey Top Dog,

Sounds like you had a long and wet, if not cold, ride!

You definitely have more brass than I have. I just can't bring myself to ride Wildfire ("Black Beauty") in the rain. I take a long look at those perfect tupperware and metal lines and just think, water and dirt--it's so wrong!

I also wish there was a sixth gear--or that fifth was more of an OD gear, with lower RPM's. At 60 MPH, I'm at 3k. Would like it 1k lower!

The gearing reminds me of my dad's many German cars, however. Does feel like home!

Ride Report

Top Dog: Congrats on your new ride. Just got my 06 K12LT back from Beaudry Motor Sports yesterday. The ride to Chattaroy, a whooping 42 miles was an experience, since my 1/4 mile driveway was still covered with about 1 inch of snow. They had to replace my trunck since the locking mechanism attachment pins were never originally installed at the factory. Result...It work at the dealership but when I got her home...no open.

I now have 314 miles, all accomplished at 37 degrees or lower. The ride is 20 times better than my previous 86 K100RT. The brakes are phenominal! The handling is superb! The weight is considerable. The looks are astonishing!

Lets get together and ride if you don't mind associating with a retired USAF guy! Semper Fi!

welcome to the LT world

probably wouldnt have wanted to make that inaugural ride on any other bike :)

at first i didnt think id really use the heated stuff that much......now i dont know how i live without it

the one thing about the controls.....with respect to the lighting....they are all perfectly placed so pretty soon u arent looking anyway.....they are right where they ought to be....

Thanks for your info on the first 660 miles of your K12LT.

I have a question that some of you should be able to help me with.
I am going to buy a K12LT in about 5 months. I have sit on it, read articles, read the forums, and I just gotta have one!
I had a 80cc dirt bike when I was a kid, a Honda 400 in my early 20's and for the past 4 years I've been riding a 2002 Honda 750 cruiser and I've averaged 12,000 miles a year on that bike. I know that the K12LT will be the biggest bike I've ever ridden and from what I've heard it rides more like a sport bike than a cruiser. I really don't know what to expect. I am a little apprehensive about the size and weight. For someone that has never ridden a sport bike or anything bigger than a v-twin 750, do you have any wisdom to impart?

Lots of weight

I came from a VMAX about 590lbs. The most important thing I can tell you to do is always keep the wheel straight when stopping. I almost dumped mine like 5 times before I stopped treating her like my VMAX.
