I think I have finally found the right bike for the riding I like to do. I started touring in 2004 on a friends Dyno HD. Since it was my first time on the long ride I didn't mind the vibrations, wind, gas stops and the general fatigue, I was riding and that was all that mattered. I then bought the HD Fatboy and again, since it was my first owned bike I didn't mind all those uncomfortable things that took place, I was riding and that was all that mattered. Next I decided that I wanted something a little more dependable, faster and had more storage. I got a great deal on a new FJR1300 Yamaha. Nice bike. Smooth, fast and a lot of storage with the top box. Plus could take the storage off and had a nice sport bike. Not a bad bike but I noticed that it had me leaning forward even with the handle bar risers, and put a lot of pressure on my wrists. Plus all the comforts were extras. After the two week rides, I couldn't wait to get off the bike. Finally, I read all the articles and it came down to the Goldwing and the BMWLT and the LT won out. I just purchased a used 09 LT and though I have only rode it home from buying it, that hundred miles was really nice. With a few new options I think this could be the bike I stay with for a long time. Plus I will owe on it for a while as well. It is good to hear how these bikes are well liked within the touring community and that they last for as long as they do. Thanks for all the great information as well. Welcome to our MAD, MAD world. Start practicing your insane laughter now. Also get use to the grin you'll have on your face once you get over the learning curve and really start to explore what this bike is capable of. I keep my rev's up and slip the clutch when I maneuver at low speeds and am usually able to impress the kids on their smaller bikes with her maneuverability. Then when you find a nice twisty road she'll make you forget shes a "luxury touring" bike. Have fun.

Thanks for the welcome, I have noticed that I have to slip the clutch at the low speeds, I was thinking that it might not be too good for the clutch but from what I am reading, it seems to be the thing everyone does. I have also noticed that the cornering is extremely better than I expected. I have not scraped the pegs yet though. How much can I really lay this over or should I even be trying too?

Don't worry, you'll get to the peg scrapping part soon enough. All it takes is time. And I've been able to do it slower than full bore. :D

Welcome, RPMs up use the clutch and remember first you get to scrape triangles on the base of the centerstand. :bike:

You really shouldn't... Don't do it... Wait... You already did??? <sigh> You joined a unique club my friend... Congrats and welcome aboard....

Two immutable axioms:

1. Keep the R's up. Your coming off bikes that had that low end grunt. The LT likes 4000's and 5000's and 6000's (or more :D ). Use 5th gear ONLY when you are on the wide open highway or freeway.

2. This machine has got to be in gear when ever you put the side stand down.

The rest you gain by just pointing it down the road... oh, and spending an inordinate amount of time cruising this web site...
