I would appreciate any ideas re the best route for a day ride from Shasta up to Crater Lake. I am hopefully making the ride in October.

I did from crater to sac a month ago. It seems that up 5 to 97 is the only option. But if I am wrong and there are other good options I would also like to know.

If you want to take a loop around to the crater then:

Head out of Mt Shasta east on HWY 89 and then Co Hwy A19 over to Hwy 299 @ McArthur. After that head NE on 299 to 139 up to the road that leads into the South entrance of Lava Beds. Ride through Lava Beds and then up to Klamath Falls and continue North to Crater Lake.

This should be a good days ride with some time for Lava Beds.

McArthur-Burney Falls is worth a quick stop.

Crater Lake in October? Do you have snow chains? Keep an eye on the weather, Snow is a real possibility.
