I called the local Bay Area dealers and they are not selling extended warranties except at the time of first sale. I have another month of factory warranty left and would like to buy an extended one. Can I buy it from any BMW dealer in the country? Thx.

Bob's BMW seems to be an agent for one extended repair insurance package. They (Tina) claim it is valid in California. I'm about to apply myself so I don't know much more than that.

Bob's reputation is pretty good, I'm relying on that.

I signed my 2002 LT up with 'Interstate Star Sport' through Bob's in August. Just before my factory three year ran out.

The cost, for three years, ABS and Seals / Gaskets included was $1169. It jumps to $1299 if your factory warranty ran out. Tiena was helpful and very pleasant to deal with.

I checked around but didn't find any better coverage at that price point. You can get a cheaper policy, BUT, it will not cover ABS and Seals/Gaskets.

Good luck!

I went with Motorcycle Services (www.motorcycleservices.com). I paid $868 for a 72 month contract. Keep in mind that contracts run from the time you bought your bike, so my 72 month contract gives me 3 years of extended warranty after my factory warranty expires. And, you should buy a contract a month or so before your factory warranty expires, or the prices really jumps.

I have the Motorcycle Services contract on my Web site if you want to see it: go to http://www.riderwest.com/Documents/ServiceContract.pdf

Lone Star BMW in Austin, TX will sell you an extended warranty from Pinnacle. This is the company that BMW dealers use when they sell a used BMW RTP police bike with an extended warranty.

I have a Pinnacle contract on my 2002 R1150GS. Got it about 6 months before the factory ran out. It adds 3 years unlimited miles and includes ABS for about $900. It was the one my dealer sold and they indicated they have had very good luck with them .

I have Pinnacle. To date, they have paid for my ABS hydro unit to be replaced ($3500 job) and are now paying to cover my rear main seal leak ($750 job). So for $800, the Pinnacle coverage has more than paid for itself.

WORD OF WARNING: If you ever need to make a claim, make sure you or your dealer gets approval from Pinnacle BEFORE having any work done. Yes, it adds a day or two getting approval, but it could be the difference between getting it paid for or paying for it yourself.

... and the other nice thing about a Pinnacle extended warranty is that, ** in theory **, EVERY authorized BMW dealer in the USA should know about them. That's because BMW Motorrad USA has a program with all of their dealers that if they sell a used R11RTP police bike to a customer, it will come with a 3 year extended warranty from ... Pinnacle. So EVERY dealer should have paperwork and info about Pinnacle.

I think I'm the only person who has ever bought an extended warranty at Touring Sport BMW, but when I mentioned Pinnacle, GM Frank Shockley found their paperwork (because of the used police bike program) and got the policy for me.:)

Confirm I can get a Pinnacle policy after I have purchased my bike? I bought my LT used at a BMW dealer and the Pinnacle brochure stated the policy was only available during the purchase. This thread pretty clearly states several members purchased Pinnacle policies well after their bike (which is my preferred method).

Thanks!!

Yes that is correct Jon. You do not (at least when I got mine) have to buy at the time of purchase. I do believe it is cheaper when purchased at that time. Heck I even bought one on the used RT I bought in 2000. But I believe they changed the plan and now the bike has to still be under factory warranty. As far as I know that is the only hitch..... bike has to still be under the factory warranty.

Remember: a Pinnacle extended warranty is not available directly from Pinnacle, or from an insurance agent. You can only get it from a motorcycle dealer.

And you CAN get a Pinnacle extended warranty after your manufacturer's warranty has expired, but it costs more.

Gang,

Yes, it costs more but *nothing* compared to what not having it would cost.
I cannot say enough good things about Pinnacle Extended Warranty.

They bought me a new engine in September and a new transmission in October. Now mind you I had to pay two $20.00 deductible bills. :D

Get ye to a BMW dealer that has Pinnacle and buy it post-haste. Immediately afterward you may pat yourself vigorously on the back while jumping in the air clicking your heels. Then send me the photo of you doing it!
