Bone head move of the day. Ready to go....key fell down around steering column. What to do?

Use a magnet tool. Or......start taking her apart.

Turn the fork all the way L or R. Most of the time you will be able not only to see the key but retrieve it. It will land on the plate that is directly underneath the bars.

Hold the bike upside-down and shake it. It will eventually fall onto the ground!

Get some of those plastic air-soft pellets. Only need a few. With the bike in the exact same position it was in when key dropped, drop a pellet down the same way the key went. Watch where it goes - give ya some direction to start looking. Most are UV reactive - use a black-light to help find it if need be.

Drop a few and follow them - bet they don't all end up in the same place.

There are some amazing hidey holes on top of the engine. Right side - amazing spaces that seem to magically suck things in. Hopefully your key didn't go 'down' that far.

O.K. I decided to get some guys from work and we took her to the shop. Hooked her up to an overhead trolley crane upside down and started shaking. Sure enough that key fell right out.

You guys are a riot; I needed the humor. The winning suggestion was to turn the fork full left and then I saw the key on the plate beneath. Salvaged a beautiful afternoon with a great ride. Thanks for your input.

My attemp at a solution...

Since the pack rats keep stealing my keys, or I keep losing them, what ever....anyway the last time I bought a couple of keys I bought a couple of these curly slinky type things.

Now when I get off the bike I slide it around my wrist while I take off the helmet and put stuff away.

Now.. if I could only figure away not to lose them in the house ! :cool:

Use a Leash!

Take Bill's (KIP) idea and have the coily cord hooked to the key on one end and a quick disconnect clip on the other. Now you just hook the quick disconnect to the Bike (I hook it over the throttle cables under the right handlebar) and the key is harnessed! If you drop it, just pull it back up with the coily cord.

I don't have a picture handy but could go take one later (after our chowder run today!) if needed. Really, it is just one of those coily cords that all Casinos give out upon request for the slot players to hook onto their "player cards". It's free, and I have been using the same one for over six years now!

And since it is plastic, there is no danger associated with it getting snagged on anything while riding.

I have my fob on the ring w/ the key and velcro on the back of the fob and above the key hole stays put very nicely

My key doesn't have a hole in it. I asked about that when I bought the bike and the dealer said it was to avoid the risk of having keys on a ring interfere with the steering column. I'll try to be more careful and also carry an extra key. Thanks.

The dealer told me the same thing about a ring "getting caught in the steering. The key(s) I have I believe are for the RT and the have a hole in the black part.

If I can't keep from losing the key with a fob of some sort, I am sure not going to keep a key without one. It seems my problem is getting off the bike and holding the key in my hand while carrying "items" then laying the key down with whatever I am carrying. Or the darn packrats are taking them ! ( I think that's my story and I'm sticking to it!)

I have always used a "soft fob" type key ring. This coil type works well. It came with the quick disconnect as described by AlaskaFish's post. I didn't think of connecting it the way he described. I took them of of the two I bought.

Next time you buy a key, ask your dealer for the different types available.

None of the keys come with holes in them for that precaution. You just need to drill the rubber part so that you can attach whatever "fob" or "leash" you decide to go with. As the dealer said, you want to make sure that it is not something that could become an obstacle to your steering! Our solutions are not hard enough to cause any probs. Plastic will give way if there ever is a tangle!

Read my lips, 108,000 miles with a large, silver Kokopelli on the key ring without a problem. Guess what? It's on a key ring for the GT now.

I know of and have never heard of anyone ever having a problem with this.

Ray I am glad you were able o get the key back from the abyss :D
I have had that happen twice and both times I was able to fish it out. I wondered about a key chain of some type and as with you the dealer strongly advised against it for safety :(
I might just be a rebel and get the drill out :rolleyes:

I got tired of trying to find that little key in my pocket and now have a hole in it. I then went to the dollar store and found a little LED flashlight keychain hanging off it. Much easier.
